Bidaux: Home won't sell PS3s, but has potential

Thomas Bidaux had some rather opinionated things to say about PlayStation 3's Home MMO during a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz. NCsoft's director of product development said that while Home is very interesting, it will need to offer something more significant than avatar customization, or it will remain quite limited.

We're not quite sure where Bidaux is getting his information from, but Home will offer gamers much more than changing their in-game character's appearance. However, some of Bidaux's comments did make a little sense. "I don't think you can say you will sell more PS3s because of Home, but if the PS3 had the right penetration in the market, then yes - Home will be very interesting," he said.

We don't believe anyone ever claimed Home to be a PS3 system seller, but if all promises are kept, it will certainly go a long way in helping the PS3 gain back its lost market share.

1. I completely agree, Home won't sell a single system. I can't see anybody holding out to buy a PS3 until Home is released. Home will be a nice bonus for people with a PS3 already, and a treat for those that will eventually buy a PS3, but its not a system mover. Perhaps a few people out there that love dollhouses might consider Home a reason to get a PS3, but the market in general won't get too excited about Home.

2. Especially with the xbox clone of home they are working on

3. Yeah, I have to totally agree. When I had first heard about HOME back in March, I thought it was great, but it has lost its novelty ever since. I just can't see someone one paying $500 (soon, $400) JUST* for home. It will be a great addition for those whom have already taken the plunge into the PS3 world, but won't move any systems. Hell, I don't think anyone buys a 360 just for Live, I know I didn't.

5. I would love for them to allow you to create your avatar and use it in various games, namely sports games. Instead of having to recreate your likeness in each and everyone of them, you just create it, and then import it into that game. It will never happen, but it'd be nifty.

6. IT depends if this has legs beyond the novelty period... my normal routine is; turn on, check messages, start game/movie/psnStore... now, why would i want to go into Home?

7. The sum of the parts is greater than the whole. It's simple really.

Seems like Thomas Bidaux just saw a few avatar HOME videos and decided to make his whole assessment on this one factor.

8. I don't think Home will sell systems on it's own but it will definitely be one of the things that draws people's interest to the system. Games sell systems, AAA titles like Halo, MGS, and FF sell systems by themselves. I think Home will be one of those things that people look at along with other contributing factors such as free online, exclusives, blu-ray, and other things of that nature to help steer their decision on buying a system.

9. I think I remember some describing both Home and Little Big Planet as console sellers when they were both announced and while I'm still very interested in LBP I haven't been excited for home since it was announced. The more I think about it I don't see myself wandering around a virtual world hanging out and decorating an apartment. I'll probably try it out for a week and then set my console to boot up to the XMB.

10. Honestly, I wish Home would die already. You know if they actually was able to launch it like they promised they would this year, I would have welcomed it with open arms. But the more I think about this "Home" concept, the more I realize it is nothing more than vaporware trying to sell people of this great online community, meanwhile they barely fix what wrong with PSN and the Store. While they are mucking with that junk, give us our custom sound tracks option, in game messaging and community forums even if it basic webpage java apps. We know they have been working on it or have it working (E3 demo) but they delay it for Home. Which doesn't look like it wont be out until Spring, if we are lucky. Just in time for GDC, the place they first announce this project.
