New PlayStation logo patented, but will it exist?

The Japanese patent office has a really neat logo in its system right now -- Sony has apparently filed for a new image to represent its console. Look at it. Doesn't it just scream "Sony ownz teh worlds1!1!!!1one!" or at the very least, "Sony goes global"? We doubt we'll see this logo at the startup of our PS3 or, in a decade, PS4 games, but if it get implemented anywhere, it's probably going to be the symbol for any new download service or be a part of some online functionality.

It could be something as miniscule as a little ball that rotates, telling you that a webpage is loading or a download is in progress. Or it could be a concept of the next controller that you implant directly into your eye -- after you remove your worthless one that actually sees. That makes perfect sense to us, but we've been wrong before. If this gets used at all, what do you think it'll be used for?

1. Would be a cool logo for the Global PlayStation Network.

2. I think you guys hit it on the nose. An online cursor or Playstation Online. From a marketing perspective the fact that the square and the triangle look too symmetrical and therefore too similar, may dissuade them from using it on anything recognizable.

But then Sony's never been known for its great decisions in marketing.

3. I agree with the loading thing, I could imagine it swirling as I load a web page/PlayStation Store

Or, as you alos mentioned, a new symbol for the PlayStation Network, maybe to coincide with an upgrade (*gasp 12 October :p )

4. FYI - Logos are registered as trademarks not patented. Patents are completely different (for example, there are very likely Patents on the Cell technology).

5. Could use some color for the symbols. I miss the old commericals that ended with a robotic "PLAY-STA_TION"

6. Maybe it'll be a little logo on game boxes indicating that it's PS network compatible, kinda like the nintendo wifi logo. In other words the PSnetwork logo.

7. I don't like the look of that "logo" At all!! i hope it never gets used ever,.

That is one retro looking commercial! The amazing thing is that the game was only out only 10 years (or so) ago and even £1.99 PSN games have more polish on them.

Check out these games if you want real retro...

9. your posts are always so informing nick. seriously, do you get paid to talk in teen-uber-forum-fanboy-smack? i really enjoy all the sister sites to engadget/joystiq. and being a fan of the ps3, i naturally enjoy coming here. but i only need to read a headline to know when your dumbass is posting it. can we please just get normal and heaven forbid, professional headlines and news articles. compare your childish posts to anything on joystiq for reference. and now youre infecting pspfanboy. ugh!

everything after that is completely useless.

its certainly a godsend to see new people joining the crew. it hopefully means less posts from you :)

10. its probably the logo for exclusive games of rthe ps3, man i think it would be a good idea, also meaning that the game has online gaming. GTA4

11. @9:
I think Nick's posts are fun. Do you really want every post to be stiff and bland? I think Nick has a good sense of humor and it lightens everything up. Not everything has to be so serious.

12. @ Joe -- sorry you feel that way. Last I checked, this is a blog, not a newspaper. Creative licenses exist here because it IS a more relaxed atmosphere. If you don't like my informal stream-of-conscious style of writing, it's fine if you skip over my posts. You'll miss a lot of news, but as you said, headlines generally outline what the news actually is. I'd just appreciate it if you didn't step into my metaphorical "work place" and talk trash about me.

13. It's for the Dualshock 7 - the controller drains money from your bank account as you use it. It's coming out in 2009.

Why does Sony always steal its ideas from Microsoft? Grow up Sony fanboys, grow up! Halo Twee forever suckaz

15. Some major weak sauce right there. They really do want to look like 3DO dont they... Oh and where the hell are my free blu ray movies??? did anyone get their five free movies yet? and how long did it take?

Posted at 11:10PM on Oct 3rd 2007 by Darko

16. Ooooof, I'm usually a big fan of Sony logos, but this is going to take some getting used to by me... Not so hot.

Posted at 11:14PM on Oct 3rd 2007 by ill trooper

17. I think it sucks. It doesn't fit anywhere in the current scheme of things I pray it's not the direction they intend to go.

I could see this being good for something related to a new kids system or something (like a Tonka-tough yellow and blue PSP) but not for anything PS3 related.

When you look at the logo for Home and even the upcoming Dress -- not to mention the very subtle XMB icons -- this new logo just screams 1985. If anything it looks like what they probably came up with first. Maybe this was filed like 15 years ago when they were still toying with the idea of a CD-ROM for the SNES.

18. @15 - im still waiting on the free blu-ray movies myself. it said 4-8 weeks on the sign up. i think the latest mine should get here would be around mid-november since i bought my PS3 in mid-august and sent the form off around mid-september.

but neway, yea i dont thing that logo really hits the spot. did any of these "designers" take a design class in college. the shapes dont balance well at that angle. it draws your attention away from the X. plus the square is not easily recognizable unless your already familiar with the playstation brand.

it'd be a good idea to come up with a logo for the PSN or something so games are easily recognized as online titles like what Microsoft and Nintendo are doing now with their Live and Nintendo WFC symbols. if that's what theyre going for, i say swing and a miss.

19. @15

Seems we both haven't gotten our blu rays! who's to blame Amazon or Sony???

Posted at 1:03AM on Oct 4th 2007 by sicklesdawg

20. i think its a Sony Ericsson Playstation logo
as the ball behind the square, circle ..... is the same ball as S.E but missing the color and the other marks are the regular ones of Playstation it makes sense as a S.E representative said there is going to be an announcement of a Playstation branded Phone
so this might be Its logo (like WALKMAN and CYBERSHOT )
