If you still needed more confirmation about Sony's new PS3 model, which most believe will be a slimmed-down 40GB unit, this might be just what you need. Sony's Blu-raySavings.com lists the new model as a qualifier to receive five free Blu-ray movies once you've purchased the system.
Earlier this week, Sony spun us into a frenzy when an FCC filing was published detailing some features of the CECHG01 model. At this point, we're not too sure what Sony's waiting for as it keeps declining to comment on one of the worst-kept secrets of recent memory. Just go ahead and announce the thing already!

I think they are afraid that if they announce a new low price model that is not distributed yet, it will cause the same problem that the new PSP slim did to the old ones. If we know a new low price model is available, who would buy an expensive 80GB? It's hard to say. Time will tell.

The best theory I've heard is that the new SKU will be released on October 30th to coincide with the release of Spider-man 3 on Blu-Ray and the release of Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction. It would've been perfect for the new SKU to be released with MGS4 just in-time for the holidays, but I guess the holiday line-up as it-is should suffice.

Yes, I read your post, but I had this article written for awhile before you posted your comment. Thanks for the tip, though!

I hope they release it in October, on, like what TheGuy said, to concide with Ratchet and Spider Man 3. They are bundling in SpiderMan 3 right? I hope so, then they will also have Folklore and Ratchet to back them up. It will be the PERFECT blunt of Transformers on HD DEAD! MUHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHA

I hope they release a 120GB model, it makes sense because its been found that Wifi and card slots havent been removed, and 120GB HDDs are fairly cost effective. Drop the current 80GB to the lower price, and replace it with the 120GB.
I mean, they're stepping up the PSN and want to add movies etc to it, more HDD space is better then less, and the PS3 then competes with the xbox2 elite space wise.

"worst kept secret" is becoming one of the most overused phrases in gaming lately.
we understand. we get that developers, publishers, and manufacturers try to keep things from us consumers, and you guys are proud that you were all sleuthy enough to mete out the truth, but enough is enough with the "worst kept secret" thing!
i can probably count 15 or more stories from joystiq and other sites this year in which they claim, "this will go down as the worst kept secret in recent/current/gaming history!"
anyway, actually on topic, a $400 gig PS3 is a necessity at this point.
there are *MILLIONS of Playstation 2 owners that are simply waiting for the console to drop down to a price they feel is reasonable.
a combination Blu Ray player, games console, Linux supporting, USB compatible, hard drive swappable, mouse and keyboard friendly, Wi Fi enabled, internet browsing, backwards compatible, memory stick loving, PSP connectivity boasting, HDMI sporting, photo, music, video browsing, PC/PS3 streaming, and free online pimping machine, for $400? please, that'd be a hard bargain for *ANYONE to turn away.
i'm of the camp that thinks the Playstation 3 is worth it's price because of the features listed above, even at the $600 that i paid for it back in February, but $400 is an absolute *STEAL. especially with the cost of HDTVs dropping as low as they are (i've seen 720p sets for $500 or less nowadays).
the Playstation 2 sold 115 million units and *COUNTING. compared to the competition, the PS3 has a *LOT of room for growth, whereas the X Box 360 has already reached nearly *HALF of the original X Boxes install base (the X Box sold a total of around 25 million units), and the PS3 has barely sold a *FRACTION of it's predecessor's numbers.
the fall 2007 lineup is looking rather solid, whether it's multi-platform or exclusive, so diehard Playstation fans that have yet to hop onboard, have plenty of reasons to do so, especially if they plan, or already have, an HDTV (i got my PS3 before i got my HDTV, but now that i have *BOTH, i'm in HD gaming and movie *BLISS right now. i can't remember what it was like playing games on my 19" SDTV a few months back; i'm enjoying a 40" 720p LCD Samsung, and man am i spoiled now. if it ain't in HD, it ain't for me, is my new motto when it comes to games and movies).
i really hope this $400 PS3 is a reality, as this benefits not only Sony, but us gamers as well, as it will encourage sales of the PS3, which will in turn inspire developers to publish more titles on the console, which will in turn make me, and millions of other PS3 owners out there very happy.
i expect that rumored "October 12th big bang announcement" will probably be the reveal of the 40gig unit, with the new price tag. better start saving your pennies, fence-sitters, because if this is true, you'll want to gobble up your unit asap.

i don't see the point of having multiple hdd units. who actually uses all that space? if i had one i'd use it mainly for saved games or w/e and maybe get some dloaded stuff but i wouldn't need large amounts of data for nothing. well i would get a 40 gb version though if it has all the same things in it like the original 60. what ever, we'll see.

MetalKingSlime: I have lots of demos, trailers, music, pictures, add-ons, patches and PSN games on my PS3, I've actually had to delete stuff to make room recently. I'll be getting a bigger drive for mine.

1080p. It's the best (key to remember: 1080 is bigger than 720, and p is farhter in the alphabet than i).
I spit in the face of people who don't know their HDTV resolutions!

I had always been a little upset that they weren't offering this deal when I bought my PS3. But now that I've seen the choices, I don't feel so bad.

If you are going to get a 720P or 1080i resolution go for 720P.
If you want a cheap 1080p tv I'd reccomend this http://www.sharpusa.com/products/ModelLanding/0,1058,1832,00.html
(its cheaper at other stores)
