Our initial title for this post was admittedly more flame-worthy, but we decided "immense potential" sounded better than Sony's off-handed "beyond the Wii" inferences. While the title is different, the underlying message remains the same: the PlayStation Eye is being touted as revolutionary in the realm of 3D tracking. The director of
Eye of Judgment, Kazuhito Miyaki, commented thus on the camera: "
there is much more potential and ability in our technology." He explains that while the card-game is just that, every new PS Eye game will create a completely different dynamic, so the possibilities are pretty close to endless.
We weren't sure if his quote about the PS Eye not being a key device to the PS3 was a knock at Nintendo or not, so you decide: "All of the different Eye Toy games that we've made so far and the wide range [of gameplay] that we have delivered shows that the camera isn't the key device, it's what we do with it that's important." We like pretending that it isn't, since neither the Wii or PS Eye have matured into products worth passing our judgment on. Either way, whether you own a Sony console or are completely satisfied with your Wii, you'll have a fantastic peripheral and a unique console experience headed your way.

@2: Go look up some game videos of EyeToy games, or of anything related to PlayStation Eye. Interactive stuff based on what the camera sees you doing etc. Pretty fun stuff, although the EyeToy(PS2 version) has poor quality and buggy jpeg compression that makes the games kinda crappy.
I hope that the Eye gets more development support than EyeToy. There are only a handful of EyeToy games, but then again it was held back by PS2 technology, jpeg compression artifacts, and the poor lighting adaptability. The Eye is far superior and should be able to do all the EyeToy was MEANT to do and more.

This will have the same kind of support as the Eyetoy and it will be similar games. This is NO way for it to match the Wii motion capabilities.

@3 Like I said excuse me for not knowing, but as hard as this might be to believe, my life does not revolve around some gimmicky game peripheral.

Look, your buying the camera and then getting the card game for free, not the other way around. Even if you don't like the card game, just get it for the camera.

What would be really cool is if they had a two camera, stereoscopic setup.. for real 3d positional tracking. But, the games would be way too complicated.

The eye toy *did* abysmal because it *was* abysmal. Things are a little different this time around.

The Eye cost $60 dollars. im hard core gamer and its true i dont own a Wii but an alternate wii like controls for most likely the 360 would be nice. the PS2 is getting some Wii like peripherals soon so i suspect that we will still be seeing PS2 games comming out. People dont understand the the Wii tech can be copied by others i meen look at guncon its uses basically the same tech.

If Sony want me to buy this, they have to get some good apps to use with it.
If they allow face-mapping in Home, and then allow thi face-map to be imported into a number of their games (shooters and sports games would be awesome), then I'm sold. I'll go buy one. Until then, my old eyetoy doesn't need any company in the bedroom drawer it lives in.
