He mentioned a cheat code in Lair that unlocked a "Hot Coffee" pot -- an actual coffee pot, which others at the GCDC got a kick out of, but he digressed from the humor behind the GTA: San Andreas fiasco. "If you cannot have satire about these things, that is approaching the realm of McCarthyism." Pressing further, he mentioned the movie Eyes Wide Shut, which dealt with relationship issues in marriage, among other things. Eggebrecht wants to see games with that much ... ambition hitting shelves, which require games to be placed on the same art pedestal as film.
Eggebrecht finally got to the meat of his argument -- censorship in Lair. Sony sought a "T" for Teen rating, since the game appeals to teenage gamers, but the ESRB continually knocked it to an "M" for Mature rating due to blood and visible "chunks" of other dragons getting slapped away in fights. In the end, Eggebrecht said, "they let us through with a Teen even though you can use fire - you can set up to five, six thousand people on fire. They burn, they run around and they scream, but of course that wasn't a problem [due to the absence of blood]."

I wholeheartedly agree with him. Being a gay person myself, I would love to see more gay relationships in videogames. And the ones that have been done, were just stereotypical and were there for a cheap laugh.

What the hell is your problem BMWM3P? You need to grow the fuck up. This is the real world. You can't have everything your way. That crap will never happen. The reason why you see gay people on TV is because it's becoming mainstream and more people are accepting it. It's going to keep on happening until most people accept gays. You don't need to get all pissy at gay people when it's not even their fault. People are born that way, it's natural. It's a proven fact. A lot of gay people don't even want to be gay. I know when I first realized I was gay I didn't want to be. Now, I'm assuming you're in either middle school or high school where gay people get picked on a lot, and I'm sure you're one of the ones that does the picking, in college that shit doesn't happen. It's because as you get older, you get more accepting about things. So like I said, grow the fuck up and get your head out of your ass.

Oh and you want to know something about gay people ruining the country? Predominantly gay towns have the highest market value. Houses have higher valueo, the schools have more money and higher proficiency in standardized tests, etc. etc. That's why San Fransisco is one of the best places to live in the US. If you want I have a document written by professionals if you don't believe me.

hah, Hot Coffee Lair..
What I find interesting is how they got a T: No blood..
so, I guess if you just take out the blood from a game, it doesn't get anything above an M?
still, I'm happy that Lair didn't get the M rating.. There's more appeal to a T..

I think BMWM3P is just trolling. While that level of hate exists, I doubt its practitioners read gaming websites. More often it is the type that overcompensates by labeling everything "gay".
@treekiller1234
It will be awhile before you see it. Even reasonable people are biased towards expecting heterosexual relationships in both games and literature. But then again, I don't remember seeing a gay/lesbian video or book section even a decade back. So maybe you'll get your wish. Games with a faceless protagonist (i.e. Fallout 2) usually permit it.

So do towns with rich white people. Don't match bias with bias. It never works out well for anyone.

Well of course borland502. I'm not saying they don't. I meant to say they have high market values. And as for BMWM3P, if I could care any less about what you have to say from now on, I wouldn't be caring at all. Even though I'm guilty of doing it, remember kids, don't feed the trolls. If you ignore them enough, they'll go away.

You know what, I'm tired of this shit. This is the first article I've commented here, and it will be my last. Most of you are hateful, ignorant kids with nothing better to do than post idiotic posts that contribute nothing useful to the topic of the article. Now if you'll excuse me, I'll be commenting on Kotaku, where all smart, and open individuals post.

I have to take a moment to bring light to treekiller1234's supposed "factual" comments about prominent gay societies. 1. Cities with a higher gay population are according to you: "highest market value. Houses have higher valueo, the schools have more money and higher proficiency in standardized tests" Truth: The cities in which you infer are driven with a market value variable of population not by gay's making more money but rather a high demand for housing based on the limited space. They were historically that way before, what makes you believe that gay loving has is responsible for that now? The association between the two stats is simply that gay behavior is more accepted in a liberal environment and therefore cultivated in large cities. And thus the same school of thought proceeds to your comments about schools too. I would have expect more from you having made numerous references in your later posts of ignorance and strewn facts, yet you try and create a positive correlation when there is none. 2. "San Francisco is one of the best places to live." Not according to the latest poles. San Fran doesn't even rank in the top 100. In fact the closest that does to San Fran is Clayton, CA. Ranked at #57 has a pop. that shows an astonishing 68% married when compared to San Fran's of 33.9%. Not quite indicative of a gay abundant community if you ask me.
There's no reason that any of us should have to accept your perverse sexual behavior let alone your poor attempts to tell us otherwise.
I would like to finish with my comment about the original topic since it has sparked so much behavior. Good for MSRP! Art in any form should be censored if it is ill suited for a portion of the audience. We should let parents decide what they deem reasonable to expose their children to as they attempt to raise them to be contributing members to society. And as for the over look with the dragons burning the soldiers not being considered, MSRP failure to recognize that as a issue shouldn't be a justification to allow the gore that they did make note of.

You kids NEED to calm down... Gay, straight, whatever!! Dont believe what your racist, close-minded parents have taught you. They really are the ones holding back the future of society. Everyone should be able to live together as one no matter what thier religious beliefs or sexual preferences are. Just accept people for what they are. Now at the same time everyone must accept each others preferences of sexuality, meaning, please dont be kissing and making out with another woman, man, dog, tree or whatever publically, keep it to the privacy of your own home behind closed doors!! I mean I dont personally want to physically see it, but I do respect the right to be gay if they so choose.
ON TOPIC: I wouldnt care if a character in a game was supposedly gay if a)it was a chick (lesbians are cool!!) or b)it didnt show anything graphically, like a gay porn implying the homosexuality (that would just be nasty!!)

You kids SUCK!!! SO DOES CENSORSHIP!! I cant believe you kids support them censoring games or anything else for that matter... I for one would love to see more artistically free-minded games that border more along the lines of film. The line that seperates games from film is already becoming blurry and I think they should continue to mold the two together as one..

''Why do you have to impose you're sick behavior on the rest of us that don't want to deal with this shit.''
I don't want to deal with the shit that you're spewing out, BMWM3P. Why be so abusive to gay people? You're a very unpleasant person and I'm quite disgusted just by reading your comments.
There really is a lot of intolerant people here. I don't blame treekiller1234 for leaving.
I for one would like to see gay people represented more in video games. I'd love to see a romantic story like in Final Fantasy 7, 8, 9 & 10 but with two people of the same gender. Preferably male, I quite like yaoi. ^-^

Yup, I be gay too but I could care less about it being in a video game.
I'd rather see them be able to treat both hetero and homosexual relationships equally rather than drawing a line in the sand and saying "Straight couples earn you a Teen rating and gay couples push you up to Mature".
Congrats to Eggebrecht for calling the ESRB out on bullshit. I wanted my bloody dragon chunks, they go great with milk!

You speak as if the censorship is holding back the "free" in game design. I guess I'm a little confused does ESRB tell game makers that they can't do certain things in games? Or is it that the game designers choose not to b/c the audience which buys their games doesn't require/want it to make a purchase of their game? And maybe ESRB's job is simply to educate the public about the content of the game and not to restrict the content? Its great that you want more "free" in your gaming exprience but recognize that your plite is with the designers and not ESRB. I think you missed the point much the way Eggebrecht did. You need to recognize that games are made as a form of commerce that supplies the demand of the market. Market suggests that not too people care about artistic freedom and liberal arts when their shooting thier BMG!
