Think id's upcoming Rage looks a lot like Motorstorm? Well, the similarities are intentional. In an interview with Shacknews, id's Todd Hollenshead and Tim Willits talks about incorporating elements of Motorstorm into their genre-mixing FPS game. "There's obviously the first person shooting, then there are the driving games that are more arcadey. For me, I'm not a big Ridge Racer fan. The driving isn't going to be like that, it's going to be more like Motorstorm, more like Burnout. I really want people, when they play the game, to say, 'You know, it wasn't what I expected from id, but I had a great time doing it.'"
We're intrigued by id's upcoming shooter -- if only because it's a huge departure for them. We're anxiously waiting for more.
[Thanks, Joe!]

Hope it is a typo, but it is Hollenshead not Hellenshead.
The man deserves the respect of getting his name correct. He is a semi-genius.

Thanks for the quick fix with the misspelling.

I hope Rage has the magic ingredient called "fun", which Doom III was missing. Quake4 was much better.

Todd's a pretty stand-up guy, so I'm not surprised he's admitted id 'borrowing' from Motorstorm. I wonder what else Rage is going to borrow from?... =D

I don't understand how he can go from saying this:
"...we expect the data size is going to require multiple discs."
To saying this:
"Just to give you a very general idea, I think the uncompressed data on the WWDC demo was something like 30 gigs, and they actually compressed it into a few hundred megabytes."
Does that mean that the game will encompass several hundred gigabytes or something? Why would you even say you have compression technology that can compress 100:1 and still talk like you need more than a DVD? Does that mean that no matter what compression is used that blu-ray will still be "needed"??? uh oh!

I may be totally wrong, but I think Tim is a marketing type of guy. Would not know the difference between a gigabyte our a kilobyte. So I would definitively not put too much trust into this 100:1 compression ratio either.

This is another example of id's brilliance. They say, "we want driving."
Instead of putting some basic driving crap in their, they look around and go, "What driving games FEEL fun?" They come up with Motorstorm and PGR3 and say, "That is our template."
And they're admitting it, which is good. Not only are they giving props to these fun franchises, they're saying, "we like so good what you did (okay, maybe their grammar was better) that we want those elements in our game, which is...
A FIRST-PERSON-SHOOTER!
I've only recently gotten into FPS', but if you put some Motorstorm driving in their with it?
I'm gonna feel like St. Peter already let me in the gate.

I swear I was just thinking of a game that combined the awesomeness of Motorstorm and a FPS. I was actually gonna send the idea into Evolution Studios to incorparate passengers that could shoot for Motorstorm 2.
