Second PS3 price drop in time for GTA IV - Pachter

Everybody's favorite analyst, Michael Pachter, has weighed in once again on his favorite topic -- PlayStation 3 price drops. According to Pachter, it is unlikely that Sony will drop the price of the PS3 again this year even though higher-than-previous console costs will constrain new console growth by approximately 10% compared to last cycle. He does feel that Sony will look at dropping the price early next year though, just in time to spur sales of the console for major hitters like Metal Gear Solid 4 and GTA IV.

The PlayStation 3 wasn't the only console that got love though, Pachter also said that he thinks it's likely that Sony will drop the price of the PlayStation 2 before this holiday season in order to further propel sells of the Energizer of videogame consoles. The PS3's diminutive daddy continues to sell at a fantastic rate and a price cut down to $99 would help maintain or even increase the sales rate of the 'last-gen' console. Continued strong sales of the PlayStation 2 would also help prop up Sony's game devision while the PS3 continues it's slow ramp-up towards profitability.

1. A quick question. How many of his predictions became true?

Posted at 6:09PM on Aug 7th 2007 by Tesley

2. Quite a few of them actually, like the PS3's previous price drop, the phasing out of the PS3's 20gig sku, as well as the Xbox 360 price drop.

But he couldn't possibly know what he's talking about

3. You should check out The Bonus Round at Gametrailers. Pachter himself pretty much says that most of his predictions are pretty dodgy, unless you're talking about whether or not to buy stock in a company.

4. Sony is fighting on 3 fronts:

PS2 vs. Wii
PSP vs. DS
PS3 vs. 360

With a price drop, the PStwo should be the top selling console once again for 2007 and xmas 07... who knows what will happen in '08.. a sub $100 console has never really been available before. Although, after 7+ years of cost reductions, the PStwo is pure profit even at $99.

PSP will gain more sales with the slim model coming out, although it will not sell nearly as much as DS. And, the 80gb stand alone will go to the $499 mark with a bundle sku going to $599. They may do an MGS4 bundle early next year... like they did with MGS PO.

5. @phattie: Just to let you know: I recently saw a PSOne over at a local Newbury Comics shop (brand new) selling for $50.99! I also remember during the crash of 83-84 that the Atari 2600 was selling for $99.99 then 3 weeks later dropped to $49.99 then a month later dropped down to $29.99! And the 2600 at the time was the most popular console available (like the PS2 is now!) Not trying to argue, but I'm just saying that there has been cases of sub $100 consoles before. =)

6. Tesley, Pachter has less than a 50% rating. Even the ones he gets, he doesn't actually often get.

Example, he says he correctly predicted the 360 price drop. But actually he predicted it would be announced at E3. It wasn't. Hell I can predict a price drop on everything as long as time frame is not requirement for correctness.

This guy is an idiot that admitted on camera to spinning the truth in favor of companies that pay him proper respect. Proper respect? He thinks he is Don Pachter from Sicily. He is an outsider and an admitted liar that adjusts facts to suit whomever sucks up to him that week. Don't we have enough suits screwing up the industry without adding to the already polluted gene pool?

9. Hatchetforce, if you get to know Pachter, you'll find out he's a hard working, easy going guy, good natured guy. Don't badmouth a guy you don't know. I can call you a dickhead but I don't know you at all so I won't because you might be Mother Teresa for all I know. Let's see you do a better job than Pachter first before you even start talking shit.

10. @Consolcwby,

Yea those consoles may have been sub-$100 but $100 was worth a lot more back then than it is now. Inflation is a bitch. So in terms of what $100 is valued at right now we have never seen a console at that price. Not trying to argue, but I'm just saying that there has not been cases of sub $100 consoles before. =)
(Unless you talk about DEAD ones)

11. @4&5: umm, i know it's a lame console, but the gamecube has been $99 for a LONG time now - and it's still currently on the market. I guess you two might be considering it a portable system instead of a console due to the lunch-box handle on the back, but seriously, i'm not sure how you overlooked that one.
