idTech is real ... and it will finally arrive in a brand new game, Rage. Simultaneously developed for PC, Mac, PS3, and 360, Rage will use the second generation of id's "Megatexture" technology. What does that mean? 20GB worth of texture information will be squeezed through the engine's technology to deliver visually stunning scenes. Regardless of the compression, the game will require two DVDs for all platforms ... but the PS3.
The need for added space in the HD-era of games is clear. Blu-ray's added storage allows the game to run on a single disc. The game itself is a departure for id, where it will try to combine "60 percent shooting and 40 percent driving." After a comet smashes into the Earth, players will have to fight the monsters that roam the wasteland.
id plans to make Rage a 20 hour single player experience, and plans to offer co-op. Also, in a surprising change of pace, their aiming for a suspiciously safe Teen rating. The game will ship "when it's done."
[Thanks, Karl W.!]

NEXT TITLE: ID TAKES BACK WHAT THE SAID DVD IS MORE THAN ENOUGH!

And everyone was saying that the inclusion of the blu-ray drive was overkill for this generation, and that sony was just trying to push its new format on the masses. Looks like sony knew it would be needed after all. I think a year or two down the line this will be common place, multi disc games for 360, single disc for ps3. Just look at Lair using 25 gigs of the Blu-ray, if ever ported to the 360 (which it wont be) that would be 5 dvds....insane.

Of course Sony was trying to push the Blu-ray format onto consumers. It was a great business decision. If the only thing they cared about was a high-capacity disc, they would've made a proprietary disc format for the PS3.
Since that idea is patently absurd, they killed two birds with one stone and not only gave developers more space, but also put a Blu-ray player into every home that owned a PS3.
And I have never complained once.

I doubt this is true. We'll see when it's released.

A videogame will require more than one disc to play?
OH, THE HUGE MANATEE!!!
Seriously, in a linear game (especially RPGs), the whole issue of multiple discs don't bother me all that much. I would think that anyone who complains about having to switch a disc 15 hours into a 35 hour game probably has bigger issues to deal with.
The only games where it probably presents a real possible issue with game design are the sandbox type ones, and GTA4 will no doubt be the first true test for the DVD format in that respect.

Sucks for us 360 owners. We'd probably get a watered down verse. When I get my PS3 (hopefully soon) I'll look out for it.

I don't doubt this is true. The article says 20GB worth of textures. I'll bet id knows what they're talking about.

One other thing, judging by a some of the comments it seems there are a lot of anti-PS3 people here. If you don't like Sony or the PS3, why bother coming to this site at all? I've decided that a lot of the animosity towards the PS3 comes from the simple fact of not being able to afford one.

Its going to use 2 discs so that ALL the content that the game is supposed to have will be there for 360 users.
So 360 users won't miss out on anything.
And really this is no big deal. Its just 1 game. Call me when MS has 10 games that require 5 or more discs.
Until then this is just more BluRay propaganda.
And I know this is ps3fanboy. I'm just writing this for the 360 owners who actually think that having 2 discs will make our version "watered down"

Really... who cares? It's an id Game. It's the type of game I'd buy for 360 (Live... Controls), and it is sure to be of high-quality, if not the highest quality. That more than justifies me switching discs half-way through the game.
-----
It is nice that the PS3 version will fit on a single BluRay, it warrants the format's existence in the PlayStation 3 (or the idea behind the format; Mass-Removable-Storage). But still, that's no reason to incite fanboyism with such a blatantly arrogant Headline.
Game looks great. Xbox 360 is great. PlayStation 3 is great. BluRay is warranted. DVD is still beyond adequate.

360 players are so arrogant they dont even car about the 30% failure rate is probably bigger now. so how much do you want to bet 360 owners wont care. im just saying 360 games arent that ground breaking to pay for repairs that are not covered for the warrenty. MS doesnt just give you new consoles they give you back the shitty you had before thats bound to break again because they just added the same parts they will die later in turn making you pay. God bless you if you get RROD becasue if you dont your screwed.

All this new technology, all these new textures, and id still insists on using only red and brown tones. What the hell? Blue and Green id, Blue and Green.

Who really cares how many discs it is? Didn't Final Fantasy VII come on 7 discs for the PC?
Sheesh. It's like people who spend half an hour looking for the remote instead of walking to the TV to turn it off.
