Ever since we got wind of the
digital TV tuner rumor populated by New Zealand's PS3 head marketer, we've been thinking that it was quite possible to turn our PS3's into DVRs. Possible, but according to Sony's own Dave Karraker, not likely. Sony and TiVo signed an agreement way back in 2001, to end in October 2008, that would allow Sony products to sport TiVo software. The agreement hasn't been used all that much, except for the failed PSX.
Karraker responded to the recent rumors and suppositions that the new digital TV tuner may in fact use TiVO software, saying that "We [SCEA] have no announcement regarding DVR capabilities for the PS3 in North America at this time." TiVo also replied with a "no comment." So will we see DVR capabilities at all? Probably. Will they use TiVo software? Maybe. We'll keep our eyes open and our ears tuned for any further developments.

They should do this. It would be an excellent way to combat xbox live market place.

Is it possible to just install MythTV in Yellow Dog and then just add a USB TV tuner to your PS3?
I doubt they would use TiVo software just because of all the contracts, negotiations and licensing fees. They'd probably be better off using an Open Source alternative.
As long as I don't have to pay for a subscription, I'm happy with whatever Sony would give me.

Yes maybe this is cool stuff for Americans, but for Europans, I just think a DVB-T tuner is cool, for when the analog signal turn off (in Denmark: 2009), there will be many free channels (also HD), and pay-channels. The MUX'es is splitted up by commerical and public service.

I havent had cable for about 4 years and wont be getting it anytime soon.. so, Im hoping for the analog turn off cause the ONE digital channel i do get over the air is fantastic quality (CBC-HD).. the analog channels are useless.
I will never pay for television programming unless its a prepaid/ala carte type service.. there's too much garbage i dont want.

Agreed. The TiVo interface is the best DVR interface on the planet.
Giving PS3 TiVo functionality is going to be a home run, if it ever happens.
I just upgraded my 20GB PS3 to 160GB and it was SIMPLE. Sony deserves big props for this.

I think having a DVR or even Tivo would be really cool to work with the PS3. So I hope it will happen.

If the PS3 used Tivo software to record HD via Cable Card (two cards even?) if would be the best device in my living room. I don't care if the cards needed to be installed in an ugly expansion box - it would still rule. And Phil is right, it would definitely require a HDD expansion.

You can upgrade the hard drive yourself -- I have no idea why the hell Sony even wants to put out different SKUs differing only with hard drive size, just leave it at 20gb or something and let the consumers upgrade it themselves (like what they did with the PSP -- though it was a grade-a a-hole move to make it Pro duo memory cards). >.>

This would be amazing if it comes through. I LOVE me some Tivo, and I love me some PS3, together it would be pretty compelling for many many people.

If you guys havent noticed yet, Sony hates confirming any rumors or speculations until they are ready to make the annoucement themselves... So this could still happen. Remember price cut rumors people, they said it wouldnt happen and it did. I guess we gotta wait and see, DO IT SONY!!

Why is it that most people assume the PSX was a failure? In Japan, we enjoyed the several variations of PSX that were released and they were always sold out when a new one was released. They stopped production of each model because a newer, revamped version was to come out soon after each time. I personally enjoy using my PSX as a DVR/PS2 system, however, I need another HD alternative to replace it. I know several other Japanese that are waiting for this very thing with the PS3. Heck, PS3s already have the XMB which was handy way back when the PSX had it!
