Beginning in October, savvy Target shoppers looking to jump onto the Blu-ray bandwagon can join the party with a standalone Blu-ray player. The Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player will be offered in addition to the PS3, providing consumers with a decision for their Blu-Ray movie watching. With another "tug" in the HD tug-of-war, Blu-ray gets a bonus as being alone on the shelving space for standalone players. Target has yet to announce plans to begin offering HD-DVD standalone players (not counting the already offered Xbox 360 add-on drive). As far as retail space for HD discs, Target has still confirmed they will continue to sell both Blu-ray and HD-DVD discs, alongside the standard DVD movies.

I was wondering when this would trickle to this site. The more exposure for Blu-Ray the better, however this is not as important as Blockbuster announcement. $500 is alot to be spending at Target.
Its better than nothing I guess but won't make that much of a difference.

Maybe target is phasing out HD-DVD players? Or perhaps since walmart only carries HD-DVD (i think), Target is backing up Blu-ray because of that,.

I keep asking why the HD formats are important to the ps3 and 360, and no one ever has a good answer.
Think about this, If hd dvd was outselling blu ray, would sony re release the ps3 with an hd dvd drive? Hell no. Do you think microsoft will start making future 360's with blu ray drives it becomes successful. F**k no. So why is the success of either format important to the gaming world?
OR... maybe im wrong, after all the psp was a huge failure that sony had to take off of the market after the UMD format failed.

@10: HD-DVD fanboy
-Anyways it nice to see the tide continuing to flow towards Blu-Ray. In my opinion lets get this format war over as quickly as possible, since having 2 formats only hurts EVERYONE. (Hint: Universal, please go neutral and just get the dam thing over with)

@10 your logic fails
#1 sony would have to continue selling their console with blu-ray due to the fact that the GAMES are on that format.. MS has last gen dvd format games so HD--DVD player is not included or needed.
why is the format good for gaming... are you really that ignorant?
here ill show you why:
Blu-Ray Disc = 50gb space for games
DVD = 9gb
let me make up an example of why the 50gb would be better lets pretend GTA4 had a streaming world 5 times bigger than it is now... goodbye dvd, blu-ray would be the only format to handle that (assuming they filled the dvd9 like the devs said)
#2 PSP was not a failure lol, and take off the market? what the hell are you smoking? in fact they just put out a brand new redesigned PSP..
with over 25mil sold.... compared to 360's 10+m sold lol
UMD may not have succeeded BUT...are SILL BEING MADE

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/10/blu-ray-and-xbox-360-its-possible-says-moore/
With the announcement of an external HD-DVD drive for the Xbox 360, Microsoft looked to clearly choose sides in the format war. However, all is not black-and-white in the business, according to Peter Moore. In an interview with Japanese website ITmedia, Moore noted that, if the format war concluded with Blu-Ray as the clear winner, Microsoft could release an external Blu-Ray drive for its 360.

Well let me start at the top of my list of hate mail. lol
never$$hort:
I Dont even own an hd dvd player. The only hd movie player i have is my ps3(and i only occasionally rent blu ray movies), and when sony releases some good games, i will not be using it to watch movies.
KiraXD.(shakes head) where should i start?
"#1 sony would have to continue selling their console with blu-ray due to the fact that the GAMES are on that format" MS has last gen dvd format games so HD--DVD player is not included or needed."
Isnt that exactly what i said? No matter which format wins, neither MS or Sony would switch which format their consoles support.
"why is the format good for gaming... are you really that ignorant? here ill show you why:"
I never said more storage space wasnt good for gaming. I said that the winner of the format war has no relevance to the ps3 and 360 because of the reasons YOU stated above.
"let me make up an example of why the 50gb would be better lets pretend GTA4 had a streaming world 5 times bigger than it is now.."
I see your point, but surely such a massive game would need to be installed onto your hard drive or have an extremely long load a cache screen before you play. If games are going to become so large that they need to be loaded on HDD, then where is blu rays advantage? We cant know for sure how important blu ray is until devs start shipping 50gb games that could not possibly fit on a dvd9, even with the best compression.
"#2 PSP was not a failure lol, and take off the market? what the hell are you smoking? in fact they just put out a brand new redesigned PSP..
with over 25mil sold.... compared to 360's 10+m sold lol

Clearly scarcasm is wasted on the stupid, but thanks for proving my point. The psp managed to succeed even though its supported format clearly failed.

"Ultimately consumers will be the ones that determine what format provides the greatest value." ~HD-DVD)
hmm i wonder which format is outselling the other by more than 3:1

because blu-ray is this gen's new (best) format, and as such is a middle ground that bleeds the line between household multimedia experiences (PS3)

@16, you are still my bitch onl;y now you are everyone elses here. You come onto a PS3 site to troll.
You can't put the words back into Peter Moore's mouth. Your god said them and now you are stuck with them. Ha ha ha. And HD DVD is going down. MS won't have a choice in the matter. They have to adopt Bluray. Now they are knocking 20 bucks off their worthless drive. Hey if they really wanted to screw you they would give you two of them. My fucking old VCR in the attic has more worth.
