PS3 Fanboy

Considering all the media hate, lack of games (in the report period), and it costing over 2x more than Wii.. the 4.5 million figure is pretty good.

Things are looking up.

This is great news. I just played through the Heavenly sword demo and i'm in love. I am shocked that Sony can keep me impressed with the PS3. I've always been a big fan of the PS3 but then I got to play Warhawk and I was blown away and now its the same with Heavenly Sword. If this keeps up, Sony will have no trouble passing the 360 in under 2 years.

to read between the lines. 4.5 million units shipped. close to 4.5 million untils actually sold to customers. that means there should AT LEAST be 600K-700K 60GB PS3 out there. and I'd say there should be around 1 million units out-there when Sony stops producing them.

Time to grab them while you can. :), If Sony can ship out 6.5 million PS3s (5.5 million sold) by the end of this year, it will be a VERY good 08 for Sony. (especially when games like MGS and FFXIII coming out)

It will all depend on further price cuts and strong softwares

that's pretty decent market penetration considering the kind of price tag it came with.

however, we need a lot more out there.
and now that Sony is starting to dig its feet in and stand, i can see more units being pushed.

but, i already concede defeat to the Wii.
i don't feel Sony can catch Nintendo in terms of units .

I agree with humpty, the media hate was a HUGE thing to have to overcome... I remember in the months before it's release, HUGE amounts of speculative fiction about suckiness.

Yet Sony have studiously and relentlessly attacked every criticism leveled towards them, and we are seeing a ramp that is increasingly exponential regarding the acceptance and respect for this system, based on Sony's relentless ability to address these issues-- and some issues they didn't have to worry about, such as reliability and features-- they got that right, out of the gate yet you tend not to see the media address this, amidst the howling disinformation presented by MS and it's clans, a war of lies.

It started with good, solid hardware, blu-ray, built-in wi-fi, high price, and few games.

We saw full backwards compatibility, then upscaling-- that alone would have made me buy one, except I already did.

Then we saw the HD video reviews saying that the ps3 is a premiere blu-ray player, passing all the tests.

We saw more games, we saw Sony get humble as they scrambled to address every concern. These people are warriors.

This was a very big thing, because it was like losing face.

But in so doing, we didn't see losing face, we saw "We are listening to you. And we are working."

Sony put their developers through cross-eyed days and nights, got sued, paid.

We get the games.

Sony gave free internet.

It works.

Constant, useful upgrades, way more and more useful than I ever got using a Windows device.

A clean, intuitive user interface.

Interaction with the folding crowd, to help others.

I could go on and on. The thing is a tank.

I think Sony are showing, more than Nintendo, more than Microsoft, what it means to listen to your audience, and deliver the best you can based on what you hear.

For instance, say that Xbox users asked Microsoft to make a more reliable machine: Microsoft didn't do it. In fact, their Elite has the same shoddy parts as it's sad predecessors... MS responded by saying, "We will fix whatever goes wrong, no matter what."

That is commendable, but it's like getting a 10-year warranty on a Yugo. Anyone who doesn't already own a Yugo doesn't care. They're already buying Hondas.

Sony started out with a great product (Sony IS a hardware company) which had fairly poor support. Through their infrastructure, in a remarkably small space of time, they have corrected any large criticisms that could be leveled at them, even so far as to backtrack on rumble, even so far as to start pumping out quality games like they were competing for money shots.

Nintendo doesn't need to do this: the stakes are too low-- "I want Mario!" (okay, here...)

Microsoft hasn't needed to do this, because through disinformation and media manipulation they have created a powerful myth that they are somehow worthy (decent games helped a lot, in the beginning).

So Sony is the bravest, and has shown the most significant EVOLUTION.

Xbox has not evolved (a SKU without a hard drive, lack of wi-fi, huge reliability problems, paid internet), and the closest to evolution for Wii is going to be when Metroid comes out (though I think it's going to be great).

One other thing: Microsoft recently announced that their "add-on" HD-DVD drive is coming down in price: to $179.

So:

I can buy an MS Xbox360 for $399, with a hard drive, and get a hi-def video PLAYER, for an additional $179= $578

The games still will have to rely on dvd. But I can watch hi-res movies on a failing format.

Oh, wait-- or, I could get a ps3 for $499, that won't break down, with blu-ray, which the games actually use, and oh yeah... it has built-in wi-fi, greater backwards compatibility, etc.

Oh, and yeah, it has a max 2% breakdown rate compared to the Xbox's 33% failure rate.

Hmmm.

I wonder which company I should put my trust in?

The company that makes a great product and listens to my requests, even going so far as to read ps3fanboy on a regular basis? (that's just smart)

Or the company that bullies people, breaks down, and offers me ever more violent fps games for me and my family?

Well thats a nice rant John. I agree: it's nice that Sony actually reads and cares about what the consumer thinks and wants :)

The only negative point I hold against them is that they could have done so much more in the dead zone we are passing through right now. There was E3, and then that was it. Think of it, we're starting to see the E3 demos, Heavenly Sword just came out. What happened to the rest?
I just hope it doesn't hurt them too much in the long run. Now that the good things will come out, keep them coming ;)

I had a 360 and sold it. All the games I want are coming out on PC as well. 2008 will see a lot more games, probably a ton we've never even heard of, so I would just give it more time if I were you. Things are now looking up.

The PS3 is in the processing games that were supposed to be ready at launch... Lair, Heavenly Sword, we just got Rainbow six... I mean.. Sony comes to the table with the highest priced system, and the least amount of content... you can't win like that... with the lineup of games from 2007, the PS3 is going to look like during chrismas and will do much better in 2008.

Ok, this is a PS2, then 360 fan talking here, and while John's 'short story' there was amusing, it doesn't really come out clearly, or truthfully.

You act like everyone out there wants a 360 to watch HDDVD. If they wanted that, they would buy an HD DVD player for cheaper than the system, something Blu Ray hasn't done yet. 100% of the reason that I bought my 360 was for the games. I don't give a rat's ass about HD movies right now. I'll wait 3 years to see how this ruckus ends up.

Has there been a game released on DVD where the developers said they could have used more space? Most games don't come close to full capacity, and by the time they do, the next wave of systems will likely be out.

Yes we get it. HD DVD is getting it's ass kicked right now, and will probably lose the war. I don't care, for reasons stated above, as well as the fact that I like what blu ray has to offer more. They have every studio supporting them but Universal. Sounds good enough to me. Plus the storage capacity is larger, where it is a bigger issue than it is for games.

Just about any game of significance on the original Xbox can be played on the 360 now. It doesn't matter so much for me, since I hated the Xbox, but it there.

This seems to be the only "go to" argument that can be used against the 360. Now, besides the fact that your using completely unconfirmed statistics, you also have to note that the 360 has sold almost 2.5 times as many consoles as the PS3, not to mention the fact that it came out a year earlier, when the technology was less reliable. But as a whole, the 360 failure rate has been a huge exaggeration by the media and fans of opposing companies alike. Sure, you hear these outrageous stories of people who have had their 360 break down nearly a dozen times, and sent it in to get it fixed, but don't you get it? They loved their console that much. (Plus they probably had plugged in next to a radiator or something.)

Well now that's just uncalled for right there. Yeah, only 360 has the shooters. It's not like the PS3 has Resistance, Ninja Gaiden, or Metal Gear Solid or anything like that. It just so happens the highest selling games for the 360 usually tend to be shooters. So what? If you want games simple and tame enough for children, go buy a Wii.

Now I have been a Sony fan for much of my life, or it's life rather, and very much looked forward to getting a PS3 when all the big talk started up in mid to late 2006. But then when it was announced at a $600 price point, and the then rumor that games were going to be as high as $90, as well as the fact that they lost the coveted GTA debut exclusive, I felt at had to look to greener pastures, or at least explore my options.

First I looked at Nintendo. Sure, the whole motion thing was a neat gimmick, and the Virtual Console idea seemed wonderful, as well as the rumor that it was going to be $199, but I quickly ran out of things to look forward to.

So then I came upon the already released Xbox 360. I hadn't really paid attention to it at launch, but now it had been out for half a year and it had quite a game library. After reading up on things like the new Xbox live, marketplace, the gamerscore feature, as well as the impressive amount of games it already had, as well as announced titles, I knew a found a new home.

In January I finally purchased one, and since then have purchased 10 games, several accessories, paid $50 a year's subscription to Xbox live (which I consider a steal), and have had ZERO failures.

I still keep a watchful eye on what Sony has had to offer the last eight months, and have really found nothing of interest. Most of the titles for PS3 that I like are available for the 360 as well. The only thing that would make me consider buying a PS3 would be for MLB: the show. I can only play the PS2 version, and a graphical upgrade would be nice. But shelling out $660+tax for a prettier baseball game just doesn't sound too appealing right now.

Sony originally announced they were aiming for 6m by the end of march after a full 3 months after that it 4.7m

More interestigly for me is the change in attutude on here from leading by the end of 2007 to keeping pace with the 360

So i guess congration to sony for having more than 200,000 PS3's available at launch but if you take out those initial supplt issues for the 360 the PS3 is in no way selling on the same curve as the 360 did in it first 9 months

@14 How cheap is a hd dvd player? is the hd dvd 360 sidekick really that much more than a stand alone. do you realize those sidekicks are selling better than stand alones 2 to 1. somebody is buying them. you worry about money but you bought a gold live account pluse 10 games WOW. i for see you coming back to this site to talk about how your system broke down 3 months from now but then again your pride wouldnt bring you to that point.i bought the ps3 because i was thinking about the long run. what games should i expect? variety! what fromat will win? blu ray! do i really want to pay for something im not commited too? nope(cough Live)! what about the abundently biased people i delt with on halo2? most likely there gonna be playing halo3(cough im black i dont even use the N word)! why did you say $660 was that for the extra controller? while your at it why dont you add in the 360s($399) controller($60) and charger($30im not sure its probably more). my router is on the opposite side of my house do i really have to put up a $100 for a wireless connection and i did buy a longer e.net cable.since you dont need the 360 sidekick i wont add it to the list. you dont sound like a fanboy so your not that bad but your way of thinking is just doesnt make sence MS just made it seem like they gave you a cheaper system and now because they didnt want to add there hd dvd drive they doomed there format. imagine if they did release with it a year early blu ray would of been dead on arrivale(i know hd dvd wasnt introduced till the end of 06!

SOLD vs SHIPPED

Sony did not sell 4.5 million units to customers, it sold 4.5 million units to retail stores. Their 'shipped' numbers should be identical. Previously, they were claiming units that they moved from factories to warehouses were shipped (I kid you not).

There are currently a little under 4 million units in homes world wide. I guess that means there are a bit over 500,000 units in stores. That's not a surprising number.

I really didn't get through your post, but when you asked if any games have had issues with DvD on the 360, then have have to look no further then GTA4, and Haze.

Both games are limited because the lack of Harddrives in all 360's and the 9 gig space.

To be honest I think the only thing that has kept MGS4 out of Xbox hands is not loyalty, its the lack of the 360 to be able to play said game.

Sorry but after your first point was about 1 years behind the times, I stopped reading.
