Seybold says firmware announcement coming early next week

Patrick Seybold, Senior PR Manager for SCEA, has replied to a comment on the latest post on the PlayStation.Blog with some information on when we can expect the next firmware update. He states that "early next week, we'll have something on the firmware." We have also heard that a member of the Sony customer support staff has let on that the 1.90 update will be happening on Tuesday the 24th of July.

We have no idea exactly what the update will bring, but we're hoping that it'll be something substantial. Gamer's Creed has a list of suspected features that are due to be added, however this is all currently just speculation. One of the features listed is "XMB is now accessible during gameplay." If this is the case, we might actually explode with excitement. We'll keep you updated with any developments.

3. For some reason whenever I have to download a firmware update I always do it when I don't have enough time to finish it.

MLB 07 online actually works now!

4. Heavenly Sword demo is already confirmed for 26th in Europe.

5. Do you folks suppose they haven't done XMB in game because of the possible hackers or cheaters?

I mean you could probably boot up a program that alters the game in your favor or something.

6. on the next update can we be able to check our e-mail during gameplay cause I hate the fact that I have quit the game to go check my mail. You could press the Ps button and check your mail while playing a game.

7. They skipped 4 weeks already (not counting 1.82 since it was a bugfix release). I hope this one has something useful in it.

8. i don't think we're getting XMB access during gameplay till 2.0, but that's just what i think

11. I want a full featured audio player.. the one they have is too basic. This is the only reason why im not using it as an audio player.

12. The in-game XMB in Home is just your friends list. You press the select button and your list comes up. You can scroll through your friends as well as send/receive messages. It works well.

13. Well, with the buzz that screen with the "select music" option created, Sony must know that gamers want in-game access to the XMB, and want custom soundtracks, and want them both now.

Hopefully they have listened to us, and will deliver with 1.90.

14. "14. iv not got a ps3 yet as i orderd it today
on my 360 i ca play music from my hard drive i was wondering if i can do the same on ps3"

Yes you can. You can copy music, photo's, or movies from your flash media or disc directly to a PS3. It is so simple to do.

15. OK, I posted a comment on the Gamers Creed site. There are far too many misspellings, grammatical errors, and punctuation errors for me to take that "updated list" seriously.

And STOP ASKING FOR IN-GAME XMB! There were several developer comments that the XMB interface takes up too much RAM. Even if they change the size requirement, there is absolutely no guarantee that existing games (compiled against old versions of the operating system libraries) can take advantage of it.

It'd be nice, yes, but I'd much rather have more codecs, folder management, and some basic OS enhancements over more esoteric items like custom soundtracks and XMB. Would it be nice, heck yeah. Is it realistic - maybe, maybe not.

16. We probably will never get the full XMB support in game as you say (If what you say is true) but it is possible that we will be able to access a particular feature of the XMB at a given time during gameplay. Like that "Select Music" option on that screen that was published not long ago. There probably will be "Read Messages" as well, or something like that.

17. i would just be happy if they make it so i can send emails from yahoo and send messagaes through myspace and use the latest flash player without problems

Posted at 1:45AM on Jul 22nd 2007 by JayFight

18. As others have said don't expect XMB to be available in games, maybe Sony will come up with a slimlined system ala the 360 guide that you can access inside of games.

...I read what you're typing about the in-game XMB, I understand what you're trying to say, but I can only respond:

Not really our problem.

Sony needs to make it happen. The 360 does it, the PS3 needs that sort of functionality also. If it entails rewriting code, then start rewriting, Sony.
