SingStar: providing unique PlayStation media

Why is there no video download service yet for PSP and PS3? In a recent interview with Joystiq, Engadget and PS Fanboy, Kaz Hirai noted that they need to provide a unique experience for PlayStation fans to interact with media. "I want to make sure that we are able to put a unique, PlayStation-esque way of presenting the music content, for example, to the PlayStation 3 users. Otherwise, we're just one of them," he commented.

"But its a part of the overall SingStar experience that you're downloading the music that so that is a kind of different experience than you would have for downloading music that's specific to the PS3 experience that you can't get anywhere else. That's the kind of thing i'm talking about, and therefore, in conjunction with Singstar, there is going to be music download obviously because we find something that's very PlayStation-esque. So I want to try to come up with something that has the same kind of different PlayStation experience for music downloads, if we're going to expand it to the PlayStation Network Store and also for video downloads as well."

Sony is waiting for a "unique" way of providing video downloads, but we adamantly believe that consumers will love to have standard video service, akin to the one available on Xbox Live Marketplace. Isn't providing downloadable 1080p video differentiating enough? We think so. Read our complete interview at Joystiq.

1. If sony actually provides 1080p video for anything other than two minute trailers, it'll have to be SO heavily compressed that it won't look any different from 720p. A single 1080p movie trailer can be in excess of 200 megs. Imagine downloading a TV show or a movie at that bitrate.

2. I agree with Stef, the file sizes would be too hefty.

Another point regarding movie downloads - I really don't give a toot about them! If I want to watch a movie I'll put Sky Movies on, rent a DVD or borrow a film from a mate.
A PSN Store containing full movies is not differentiating the store from certain other stores, it's copying them!

Perhaps PS3fanboy could run a poll of users to whether we really want this offering?

3. Streaming 1080p movies might be the way to go. Even with the 80G hard drive you'd be pressed for space after downloading a full 2-3 hour film. Then again, with the current poor performance of the PS Store (I've noticed it varies greatly with the date..big releases/demos = sloowwww store) I don't see how they can make streaming act right. I suppose other servers dedicated to streaming and accessed via the PS store would work fine.

4. =o why not just do streaming 128kb mp3's, like internet radio - but more on the scale of cable providers - with 5 or 8 different genres?... being able to play those while on the desktop would be nice. o=

(Then again, the PSN store IS really kinda slow even for this kind of service... maybe a new service in ADDITION to the store would be needed?... As long as I could get my Jpop fix - I wouldn't care HOW they did it!) =)
