Tretton offers hand to third party devs to take advantage of PS3

The claim of third party companies creating shoddy ports for the PS3 probably grew exponentially in importance from the whole EA 30fps vs. 60fps debacle and deserves a little more discussion. Jack Tretton released his thoughts on the claims that multiplatform games look better on the Xbox 360 than the PlayStation 3. He basically reiterated the idea that it's up to the developers to take advantage of the power of the PS3 and Sony is doing everything they can to assist them in development, to ease the crushing power of the PS3's architecture.

Tretton said what everyone was thinking, too: "what's the point of porting it over to another platform if it is not going to look as good on a platform that is more expensive? Why waste any money in development doing that?" We ask the same questions every night before we go to sleep, but our pillows never answer. Tretton does not want people to think the first-party titles are going to pick up the slack, rather, he wants third party companies to know that Sony is there for them, to assist them in any way possible, so that they as well as consumers will get the most out of their ginormous black behemoth. Seriously, everyone would benefit if they just tried a bit harder.

2. I think with games like R6: Vegas, The Darkness and Stranglehold (people finally got to see the PS3 build and it's apparently almost identical), it's becoming clear that if developers want, they really CAN get the same performance out of the PS3 as the 360. I think if developers are already figuring out how do it only eight months down the road, a year from now this "issue" will just be a memory.

5. I agree, Games Like Dirt, and Oblivion(Xbots, sorry but shinny isn't better when your looking at a rock. Gritty on the PS3 may not "Shine" but its how things SHOULD look) can look and run much better on the PS3, EA's crap-tastic rendition of Madden 08 can run at 60 FPS.

EA seems to be the one having the biggest problem with this, and are not known for putting all their effort into their games.

All I can say, is I'm glad to hear in the news alot about Sony really putting an effort out there to pick up the slack for games devs, who are content with releasing a 30 FPS game.

6. "Seriously, everyone would benefit if they just tried a bit harder."

But what is the INCENTIVE for them to try harder? Pleasing the smaller fan base? Or spending more money on said smaller fan base?

7. @Jldownin
dude, have you looked at the Oblivion 360 since the update? they use the same shaders and draw distance as the PS3 version, because Bethesda made universal updates for all versions of Oblivion not solely the PS3 version. and when the hell will the PSN have downloadable content for those that bought the orginal? (not the GOTY edition)

EA and apparently The Collective are having troubles with PS3 kits. Sony's precious Silent Hill 5 is being created on the 360 kit and much later it will come to the PS3.

8. @SKI: Yeah, that's a valid point, there's no install base for the PS3 compared to the 360, but that sword has another end - the newer a console is, the fewer games there are, the more likely people are to pick up YOUR game because they're starving for it. Look at the sales for Spiderman 3 - despite the 360 having three times the install base as the PS3, the 360 version's sales were barely double the PS3's. Same goes (to a lesser extent for The Darkness).

This is the reason why developers are still compelled to invest in making the game for a tiny install base, the gamers are starving for a new title.

11. Actually despite the updates, the PS3 version of oblivion is still superior.
