Sony have "ample supplies" of 60GBs available for the foreseeable future
Dave Karraker has updated the PlayStation.Blog today with a clarification about today's "60GB phase out" murmurings. The post begins with a "thanks to the fans" for their E3 support and ends with a explanation about the current situation regarding the 60GB PS3 and its place in the US lineup. Karraker states that there are "ample supplies of both models to meet the needs of consumers for the foreseeable future." Nowhere in his post does he deny that the 60GB is being phased out, though his post does infer that what David Reeves said was incorrect. The 60GBs won't sell out for the foreseeable future.
This makes sightly more sense than the 80GB being introduced just as the 60GB is removed, as Reeves suggested was the case. Instead, the 80GB system can retail for the higher price, allowing the 60GBs to sell out (which we hope to see happening at the end of the year, at the latest, as a result of the Christmas rush). We would then like to see the 80GB model having its price lowered to fill the gap that the 60GB leaves behind. We could say that we "expect" this to happen but the fact is that, with Sony, you never know what they're going to do.
We have faith in Sony's pricing strategy. Making such a big deal about a price drop, then removing it three weeks later would be ridiculous. These "ample supplies" should last for a couple of months, at least. We'll keep you updated as and when developments occur.

Glad to see this is the case. my father has a PS3 but when college starts back up, I will need my own and the price drop is exactly what I needed. If it were to sell out by July, I would have seriously questioned Sony's decision.

I'll just repost what I put on their blog.
I really hope that this isn’t just some clever execuspeak to keep the truth behind the curtain until you are ready to say “well, the foreseeable future is over, the ps3 is now 80gb and $599 only”.
If that is what happens, I believe that all of the ill will directed at Sony when this was originally “announced” will only be, to paraphrase what Reeves said, the slow burner before the tsunami. This last year has been pretty testing for even some die-hard Playstation owners. You had an awesome e3 with the price-cut announcement, and it made me even more secure and happy with my launch-day purchase; but if this comes to pass as an example of how Sony has basically pulled one over on consumers, I know I won’t be the only person who loses a lot more faith and trust in this company.

That was a carefully worded statement to say the least. He certainly implied that they are no longer making the 60Gig version.
In my view this might actually be good news. Now that they have dropped the price, they have to continue to offer something at $500 or less. I've been looking at xmas to pick up my PS3, but $500 is still a little steep for me. Yesterday I would have put the chance of a second price drop before the holidays at around 30%. Now I'd put it closer to 75%.

Alot of David Reeves stuff today and this was said in the "Engadget & Joystiq interview: Kaz Hirai and Jack Tretton, Presidents, Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc., and America"
And I quote "Jack: Well, I guess at this point the SIXAXIS controller is something that we're comfortable with and we've certainly settled our differences with Immersion. Is it something that can happen down the road? Absolutely. But the bottom line is we haven't made that decision and we didn't have anything to announce or introduce. Will we down the road? Possibly, but it's unbeknownst to me if we have a rumble controller coming out.
Oh I think you'd know before anyone!
[laughter] Well, you'd be surprised! It's a big company...
big company, everyone is saying things (ALA Reeves today)... who do we believe?

I've stood behind Sony for a long time now, but if they turn around and knock the price back up to $600 after all the hoopla they caused with the recent "price drop", it would be nothing short of suicide.

I'll be damned if anything they say isn't 'carefully worded.' They're consistently lauded and criticised against across all gaming sites if their information is just the slightest bit off.
They're still the target, and the media is still waiting for them to mess up.

"foreseeable future" is a very flexible term. Maybe Sony can't forsee past the end of July...
If I was on the fence about a PS3 (I'm not, I've had one since February) I'd be grabbing a 60 gigger with the Emotion Engine still in there while the grabbing was good.

Once again early adopters get screwed. The only consolation is that my 60GB has an Emotion Engine in it. I'm a little pissed that for the same price I could have gotten an 80GB version. Those 20GB's will come in handy sooner than later.

Ironically, after all this chaos, Sony has landed itself in a consumer friendly, corporate unfriendly position. It needs to now support a SKU at 499, period. So what Kaz or David Reeves or Karakker say is immaterial. Sony has seen enough numbers from sales in the last 4 days to indicate that 499 is here to stay.
What happened today was awful PR but good for the customer who can now be assured that he will atleast get a ps3 for 499 from here on.

I think you are right.
Also, depending on how long the 60G units hold out, re-working their product line in a few months will give them an excuse to drop the price another $50 ($100 is pushing it) that they will need to compete with the M$ drop. I'm thinking that the holiday lineup will feature the 80G unit at $450 and possibly a 120G unit to compete with the Elite at $500-$550.

For all we know, when the 60gb models are gone, the 80gb model could be offered at $499. At this point all we know is "eventually no more 60gb model." and nothing else.
More so, I don't think anyone has gotten screwed here. Remember when 500gb hard drives were like $400? Production costs went down and now you can get them for $120. You needed one (a ps3, hard drive, whatever) right away and paid a little more for the same product. I paid $600 for mine and I've had $600 worth of fun with it and there's still a ton of great games coming.

Actions speak louder than words: after the 20gb version was discontinued and sold out, did the 60gb version move down in price to "fill the gap"? No, it remained at $599. What makes you think anything different will happen. Sony will pull the same "value proposition" strategy again, they'll claim the PS3 80gb is worth $599 because of the bigger drive and maybe they'll throw in rumble controllers.
You notice Karraker pretends that Kaz's video doesn't exist and he nothing more to say because he can't very well say his boss was misquoted or is wrong. The most telling statement in Kaz's video is his going on how the consumers rejected having multiple SKUs, as if having too much choice was the problem rather than high price. A reveal look into the down-is-up-up-is-down group think that goes on at Sony. The PS3 isn't selling because the price is too high, it's because having 2 versions confused the consumer! LOL.

I just read CNET's version of this story and the GameSpot article that it linked to. Sony must be really pissed at Reeves right now. I think it is very clear that they plan to drop the 80G price once the 60G units run out. However, they can't come out an say that because that would encourage people to wait on their purchase. They are planning to do the right thing here, but they are forced to look like a-holes in the media because one guy couldn't keep his mouth shut.

they should continue selling the 60gb version until the end of the year or in the middle of the holidays. That would make sense. we know that when version 2.0 comes out, it will update backwards compatibility for the PS2 and PS1 games by a lot, since that is one of the primary issues for the future PS3 owners.
