It already looks like the price drop for the PlayStation 3 is having an effect on sales. After official confirmation of the price drop, sales at Amazon.com for the 60GB PS3 have spiked by 2800% and have overtaken the Wii and Guitar Hero: Rock the 80s as the best selling item in the Video Game category.
While it's hard to judge the success of the price cut in only one day, it's interesting to see how many people are snapping up the new $499 PS3. A price cut of $100 is not insignificant but the PS3 is still the most expensive console, and industry watchers were curious to see just how many people would be moved to purchase the console after a 'mere' 17% price drop.
Judging from the early evidence though, the answer is 'a lot.'

>At the end of the day, the price of entry to play a PS3 game is still $500
yes, but there's a huge difference between 40+GB of storage, Wifi capability and memory card reader built-in.
Also, PS3 didn't increase the price with the introduction of a higher SKU... unlike some other company did. ;)
All and all, a good day for Sony

Let me say that that Brian does not speak for all Brian's. At least my PS3 will last 10 years not ten months like some other console

HOLY CRAP
To be honest, the PS3's lack of exclusives was causing me to play my 360 (a lot) more, but as I see, there's still hope yet!

I love the price cut but I do not like the 80GB model. $100 price cut means you can buy two games!

Ha, ha!
Yeah, but no.
The 360 Elite is at 27th, one below the PlayStation 3's previous slot on Amazon. Pokemon Pearl is at 29th with Zelda: Twilight Princess at 30th. Further reference reaches back to the World of Warcraft expansion at 41st. So we're not talking little numbers.
It's also impressive, considering ten thousand units a week isn't a particularly small number.

I wonder how much fear of the new, cheaper to produce, 60Gb PS3s lacking full backward compatibility factors into this number.

I wonder what the trolls will say about this trend?... at least PS3 owners have piece of mind, and with the fall/winter lineup coming - it's all starting to look good!
Say what you want about Karayzee Ken - but he was right all along. =P

$500? That's pretty steep for a videogame console. It's a good thing they already got rid of their old $500 sku. Otherwise they would have had to lower the price to a reasonable level.

I personally thought they should have kept the 20gb SKU and offered it for $399. Then that would have really sold a lot. Still a price cut is always great news, but the $600 version is a complete rip off. 20 gigs more and motorstorm.

Got to remember, business is involved here. Having 3 SKUs is completely difficult and more pricey to manufacture - ESPECIALLY with the differences in boards cuz of WiFi, card readers, and different HDDs. I'm pretty sure they're not even in retail anymore, which means they don't even need to 'get rid of it' in a sense. But if they're still in retail, then yes I agree that it would be a good move =).

I live in Japan and 60Gb PS3s have been going for about $440usd (55,000 yen) for about 4 or 5 months now. But this price fluctuates depending on where you go. This disconnectedness between retailers in Japan can usually lead to good values for the consumer going from shop to shop looking for the better value. The used PS3 costs, the cheapest I've seen, around $340usd.
So Japan probably won't be seeing a price drop, but around 10,000 PS3s sell a month, not too shabby.
Good for North America to see a price drop. The problem is that there's already a trend for complaining about everything surrounding the PS3 so even this won't be enough. Once the "real" games start rolling I think this will subside, but how long until that happens and how long will Sony's name be rolled in the mud. How many more "mistakes" will Sony's PR machine make along the way?
In a world where everyone is hating on Sony there seems to be little room for mistakes.

If you notice, the PS3 has a 4.5/5 rating! =D! Not bad considering average customer reviews rarely get 5/5. Lol!
