What's different with the new PSP? Let Joystiq show you. | Add to My AOL, MyYahoo, Google, Bloglines

PS2 still has life for certain markets, PS3 doesn't mind

This is bittersweet news, actually. While we'd love to say that the PS2 is winding down and the PS3 is going to start steamrolling ahead (steamrollers go slow, but they get the job done), it seems developers disagree. While we'd love to rant about Ar Tonelico 2 and how we hope it comes to the US, the very prospect that PS2 games getting released into 2008 is boggling to many. Developer bigBIG disagrees, saying the PS2 is just catering to a different market. To us, that means "niche RPG market" and we smile.

So they feel there's a lot of life left in the PS2, but not for new gamers. Sure, there's a huge library of games to choose from, but if you want to get new experiences, the PS3 is the safest bet for Sony consoles. Developers are going to turn their mainstream franchises or big-budget games to the new systems, obviously, but for those of us who like the more unique gaming experiences, niche or just a little different, seems the PS2 is going to continue that trend. We don't mind. In fact, we'd ask Nippon Ichi: "Please bring us Ar Tonelico 2!" but that would be selfish. What do you guys think? Should the PS2 be abandoned sooner or later?

1. i think they should end ps2 to boost the support and sales for the ps3 thats just my personal opinion tho

2. The revenue they still receive today from PS2 software (and hardware, I would guess) sales actually help to subsidize the PS3, so I can understand why they would want to keep supporting the old machine.

But the fact remains, this is also hurting the PS3 in the short to medium run. The newest hardware needs more attractive games. I'm happy with the games I got so far, but I long for more titles to choose from.

4. Give developers PS3 devkits. Tell them the end of 2008 should be the cut-off point for making games on PS2 that AREN'T kiddie games.

7. Like I have stated before guys, the PS2 is far from dead. If Microsoft didn't rush to get a jump ahead of Sony, we probably wouldn't have seen the PS3 until early next year. They just now got most of the hardware design and manufacturing part cost(including the infamous blue diodes) down where they want it for a more reasonable price for the unit Meanwhile, the Wii sells like hotcakes and its nothing more than two Gamecubes duct tape together with a waggle control.

Like I said in another post, Sony should come out with a peripheral that has some kind of waggle and make it compatible with the PS2 and the PS3. Then sell the hell out of it with the fact that they have a back log of games that are already out and have the developers make games for both the Wii and PS2. Meanwhile market the PS3 as a viable backward compatible system with the PS2 games that are out or coming and a Blu-Ray player that is firmware upgradeable. In three years time, the next gen games are going to look so incredible, that Wii and PS2 people are going to wake up and see that they need a new system and hopefully by then, Sony will have the system at a better price point and a real library of games to compete.

8. Did NO ONE notice that the last PS1 games were released in MID 2003? That's an eight year life. The PS2 lasting from 2000 to 2008 might even be pessimistic.

This isn't the Xbox here. It'll last more than four years.

9. My PS3 plays PS2 games beautifully. Keep 'em coming, I say. I can't see VanillaWare releasing Odin Sphere or Grim Grimoire on the PS3. These are niche titles, and they need a BIG audience so that their niche is big enough to support them.

Long live the PS2!

10. After 7+ years of cost reductions, PS2 consoles are pure profit at this point. It would be foolish for them to stop selling them; PS2 does not compete with PS3 at all. If sales start declining, they can drop the price to $99 and still profit from it. Theres a lot of life in it yet. I suspect we will eventually see a $50 msrp for PS2, maybe in 2011.

I suspect there will be less original content and more movie tie in games, since they are sure bet to move units.

11. When PS2 goes, Wii games will be better but there will be less since developers can not port them to PS2 and tack on gimmickey controls

12. well as much as i didn't believe it, for the ps2 selling so well.. you know being that a ps3 is out.. EVERY time i go to gamestop or today at costco i see somebody buying a ps2, so that's pretty good.. i mean fanbots say.. aaaahhh sony is going broke, and they don't see that they can sacrifice the ps3 a little still cause of the sales of ps2 are still better than the 360's hopefully this pricedrop will help some people take the plunge

13. PS2 competes with Wii for sales, PS3 competes with 360.

Posted at 10:00PM on Jul 5th 2007 by mccomber

14. "Wrong. Anytime someone goes out and buy a ps2, it's another sale the ps3 won't be getting. And if they are just now buying a ps2, it's another sale the ps3 won't see for another 5 years."

I'd argue anyone buying a ps2 at this point probably wouldn't buy a ps3 right now anyway. The price difference is just too big for them to be competing, especially at this point in the life-cycle.
Besides that, I think if the ps2 weren't available, those sales would be more likely to go the Wii. If anything, the lack of Wiis on shelves is fueling ps2 sales.

15. excactly! waiting for something to buy a PS3 for, in the meantime i'm playing my PS2 and DS right now and i'm loving it!

16. PS2 sales are GREAT for PS3. Let's break it down.

1. PS2 sales promote PS2 game development. PS3 plays PS2 games. More PS2 games is essentially more PS3 games.
2. PS2 owners will be building a library of games, many of the Sony franchises. When their PS2 breaks, or they want to upgrade, they will undoubtably choose the PS3 due to full backwards compatability. By then all the reasons not to buy a PS3 (price and small library) will be gone, and the flaws of the other systems will be made apparrent.
3. PS2 wand. Yes they're making a Wiimote clone, and it would not astound me if devs for the Wii are getting a kit for it as well. Hot.

17. The PS2 is such a good system and with its huge install base it has a while before it slows down. Just look GOd of War 2 just came out in march. The PS2 will still sell well into 2008. But with all these big games coming for the PS3 this fall, i think the ps2 will slow down.

Posted at 1:18AM on Jul 6th 2007 by Lp47

18. The fact of the matter is the PS2 is priced $129 while the PS3 is priced $599. If you cannot see that these consoles attract two different audiences you are blind. It is Sonys smartest strategy to keep the PS2 rolling. You keep your audience until the PS3 is at a good price point and then the PS2 audience will jump to the PS3. The PS3 is obviously a big step for most. It's more than just a console it is a move into HD. So obviously a person that wants a PS3 has an HDTV or is getting one. In two to three years both HDTV's and PS3's will be priced for the mainstream.

19. I have to Agree that PS2 Competes with the Wii and PS3 competes with 360.

OHHH!!!! Why don't they release a new PS2, with a gimmickey wiggle controller and call it PSWii. Thats what they did with the GameCube and the Wii! Their punch line could be "PSWii, Better then Nintendo Wii in every way." It's not like they could get sued, Nintendo already got sued for stealing the Wii mote from another company.

Okay back to reality, PS2 sells don't hurt the PS3, that piece of junk Xbox labeled "Next gen" got a year head start and is hurting PS3 sales. How did they ever brain wash so many Xbots I donno! You should see them on XboxFanboy, they are calling M$'s admissionto faulty hardware and extention of warranty a act of "genorocity". I call it avoiding legal action.

20. ive still got my ps2 and use it quite frequently but i only do so because i haven't wanted to shell out the cash controller connectors or more ps3 controllers. i still love my ps2 so i think for nostalgic reasons that first quarter 2009 should be the cut off point for new ps2 games. by year 2010 every other system will be a thing of the past and ps3 will be the wave of the present and future. then sony can start another 10 year reign on the top!!!
