ThreeSpeech podcast producer makes a statement

While we didn't see anything wrong with the ThreeSpeech podcast (mostly because the reference went entirely over our heads), Jared Rea of Joystiq and the guys at Penny Arcade (they wrote a strip about them? Jealous.) are just a couple of people who did. Ben Furneaux, otherwise known as "The Man Who Said Those Things On That Podcast What People Didn't Like", has made a statement about what was said as an attempt to cool the fires of fanboydom that are licking at his feet.

The statement can be found on his personal blog. In it he stands by the comments he made and suggests that most of the ill-will that was received after the podcast came from confusion about what relation the speakers had to Sony's PR machine. The answer, seemingly, is none. Does that make what was said any more acceptable? That's up to you. Though fanboys have got away with saying far worse.

Be sure to read Ben's full statement. We assume the ThreeSpeech podcast will be continuing regardless of this entire debacle. Though if you're looking for an official straight-from-Sony podcast, then you'll probably need to wait for the PlayStation.Blog to start one. Which would not be a terrible idea.

2. Jared Rea (and Joystiq for that matter) and Penny Arcade should be ashamed of themselves for taking something so trivial such as this and making it seem like big news. Nothing but trashy news sites that gets all the fanboys riled up.

3. Joystiq really knows how to jump to hysterics. They're a joke.

4. "I expressed my opinion of Major Nelson's podcast/blogcast and the Xbox PR division saying that I thought their style of marketing was "like trying to be your best friend" and "grimy"."

You know, I don't think he's too far off base with that. The uproar about it shows exactly what Major Nelson appears to be; a beloved member of the xbox community who is everyones good friend who just happens to work at MS. Never mind the fact that he's payed to be that person.
Although Sony is quickly trying to take the same basic path, that's the thing that sort of gets to me about Major Nelson. It's like MS hired a guy to be your best buddy, and let you into the xbox world... it has all the appearance of being a transparent blog where you get inside info, but in reality it's just a brilliant marketing maneuver. Major Nelson has shown a couple times in the past on his podcast exactly where his loyalties are, especially when speaking on pricing of downloads in the marketplace. I'm not saying he's a bad guy, or that it isn't a great idea to have someone like him, because neither of those could be further from the truth.

I guess it's a question of where it's appropriate; a blog that is basically payed for by Sony is sort of gray. It's not like Sony has full control over every part of this (those who think Sony approves everything are a little lost on how this stuff works) but at the same time, it does basically have their name all over it. The people speaking on that site, and in that podcast, are acting as representatives of Sony, same way as the Major does. From that standpoint, they probably do need to watch what they say a little more through this particular venue.

5. No one says that Major Nelson isn't a MS shill hell he works for them but he is upfront about it from the begining of his podcast to the end of it, there isn't any question were his loyalties are but these jerkoffs from ThreeSpeach try to portray themselves as just fans/independant podcasters which is a fucking farse! These clowns are exactly like Major Nelson except they don't admit that they are shills for Sony and on their payroll.

Actually, Mccomber, I agree with you. I suspect some of the uproar stemms from the utter lack of taste, professionalism, tact, whatever, that came from the threespeach podcast. The Sony tie is what bit them in the ass. If they were completely independant, those comments wouldn't have meant a thing, however....

7. David Darke here from the ThreeSpeech Podcast... To Azorean, I'm a student at Plymouth University (As is Ben Furneaux) no PayRoll my friend!! Here are a couple of images of my games collection and hardware "http://www.red-rant.com/pic1.jpg" and "http://www.red-rant.com/pic2.jpg" as you can see, I own all three major consoles and a DS but I don't have a PSP and when it comes to games, well I only own 1 PS3 title (I'm not really fanboy material).

Posted at 4:12PM on Jun 28th 2007 by David Darke

8. Also @ Azorean, I'm also on the ThreeSpeech podcast with Ben and Dave, and you can't class me as fanboy material either, just look at the photos from my Geek Crib on my blog http://www.petecullen.net/?page_id=209 and you will also see all of the major consoles there, a far larger library of 360 games and a bunch of consoles from yesteryear.

Sorry, but we're not shills, none of us work for Sony and we haven't earnt a penny or received any free stuff for recording the ThreeSpeech cast.

9. I think the real crime here is the obvious pandering Penny-Arcade makes to MS. This is really nothing new from them. I wonder how much they are getting paid by MS?

10. it's the "all I want for xmas is a PSP" feel of the podcast that annoys people.

it doesn't sound honest

11. Yeah, they are so wraped up n the Sony hatred, they will lash out at anyone who claims to be on Sony's side.

Posted at 5:10PM on Jun 28th 2007 by gullum

12. wow!!! i had no real idea until now that it was basically an unpaid, moderated community blog. all sony does is moderate. i guess its still sony's fault in the end. im just sorry you guys personally got the brunt of the hate.

in light of all this... i just saw the penny-arcade comic. wow, thats kinda [inert four letter word of your choice here]-ed up...

maybe threespeech should do a much better job at exactly stating who they are and where they come from. and... in light of this situation, how they differ from a major nelson.

13. I also want to reiterate that Sony or ThreeSpeech didn't even give us server space... We've paid for the hosting of the file out of our own pockets!!!

Posted at 6:41PM on Jun 28th 2007 by David Darke

14. I really cannot even begin to comprehend the ridiculousness of this news. First off, whether or not ThreeSpeech is a part of Sony, funded by Sony, shoveled under the carpet by Sony, it doesn't matter. I listened first hand to the podcast, and it didn't seem shifty or anything, it just sounded like three gamers talking about video games, particularly about the current place of the PS3 in the market. Screw Penny-Arcade, at least as far as this kind of stuff goes. It seems like the whole bad press towards Sony thing is coming even from their mouths at this point, and that is just retarded. I have been reading PA for like 4 years now, and the last couple of months have been the most redundant, seething bullsh*t from them. They have nothing positive to say anymore. Just a bunch of whooey about how much they (basically) hate gaming now. So JOG OFF! As far as Microsoft being honest, PSHHHHHHHT. ONE NOTE: FAILURE RATES = 3-5% MY ASS!!!!
