PlayStation Blog alerts us to upcoming firmware update

The PlayStation 3 has yet another firmware update coming our way. Over at PlayStation.Blog, Eric Lempel announced that the team has 1.82 in the wings for release later this week (we assume the usual Thursday night update). While we're used to scrambling for data about what will be changing in each update, Sony has really gotten its act together and let us know already in their post. Firmware 1.82 will enable "the playback of AVC High Profile (H.264/MPEG-4) files." Along with that, the PSN team is hard at work increasing backwards compatibility further and further. We're glad to see Sony is taking the time to let us know what's getting updated, so our hats go off to them for this heads up.

5. things i would like

-xmb in game
-don't stop playing music when i access the store, change option, etc.
-create a better mp3 playback interface. i currently have my powerbook and ps3 networked (which is great) and i'd like my ps3 to be able to organize songs better, add a shuffle option, eq options.
- add support for bluetooth enabled Sony Ericcson phones!! (ie: k750, w800, w810... etc) also allow the phone to be used a BT remote control (as i currently do with my mac).

6. its from the fake (or rumored) firmware 2.0 for PS3

Posted at 9:39PM on Jun 26th 2007 by Justin

7. ...Great, so now the PS3 can play High profile AVCs... I was under the impression that it's rather hard to make High profile mp4s without buying some licenses...

Posted at 10:07PM on Jun 26th 2007 by Stef Geiger

8. @Stef: A friend pointed me to Super(C) to encode all my movies. It supports mp4 (H263,H263+,H264,MPEG4) files.

** Be warned: the download is really a pain in the ass but there is a description of how to download here:
http://soft.manboo.info/archives/super-%C2%A9-simplified-universal-player-encoder-renderer.html

The friend that pointed it out to me does professional photography for a living and says it works awesome. So far it's pretty easy to use (except the download part) AND it has built in "package" settings for the PS3.

Oh, did I mention it's a pain to download? (Follow the instructions on the link above)

But it's free...

9. yeah but they are good ideas

Posted at 10:43PM on Jun 26th 2007 by ekbigpimping

10. @Andir: Yeah, my issue wasn't with finding mp4 encoders in general, it was with being able to encode HIGH PROFILE MP4s, as opposed to SIMPLE PROFILE ones. Also, not everyone uses a PC.

11. H.264 support? *shrugs* Give us some other codecs guys...you know..like the rest of the entire internet uses.

Posted at 11:05PM on Jun 26th 2007 by Popfrogs

12. Is there a way to watch .avi files with the PS3?
I inserted a DVD with avi files and doesn't support the format.

Thanks!

By the way X360 fans... at least we have updates, you'll have to buy a whole new system tu use HDMI and a driver to have High Def..

Posted at 12:19AM on Jun 27th 2007 by Joe

13. This seems great. However, I would be extremely happy if they added support to read/write NTFS. I have a lot of High Definition video files that are over 4GB (FAT32 file size limit) and would like to store them on my external HDD to play on my PS3. They will probably add support when they start renting/selling movies through the PlayStation Store since High Definition does take up so much space. That or they'll just split video into 4GB files.

14. -Stef Geiger

If your not using a PC, then I assume your using a mac like me; if you can, use boot camp and run the encoder on that. If not then forget it!

Posted at 12:42AM on Jun 27th 2007 by buubuubibuu

15. @ Joe: The only types of .avi file the PS3 can pay are motion JPEGs (Linear PCM and μ-Law).

Here's a full list of the types of files that can be played. http://manuals.playstation.net/document/en/ps3/current/video/filetypes.html

Posted at 12:47AM on Jun 27th 2007 by Gunegune

16. @buubuubibuu: Yeah... except you get maybe 1/4 the performance running windows. Kinda of makes it suck. Actually Windows doesn't even know what to do with the second core in my Core2 Duo.

Posted at 1:26AM on Jun 27th 2007 by Stef Geiger

17. @Stef Geiger:

Presumably they already have an MPEG-4 license because Blu-ray uses it.

Posted at 5:24AM on Jun 27th 2007 by Laurens Holst

18. Of course you can encode H264 High profile with mac. Just give a trive to ffmpegx, or visualhub or Episode Pro

19. Showstopper,

There are a few tutorials here.

20. @5

"don't stop playing music when i access the store, change option, etc."

When play music hit the PS button the XMB will come up. You can access the web, message ect.

"create a better mp3 playback interface. i currently have my powerbook and ps3 networked (which is great) and i'd like my ps3 to be able to organize songs better, add a shuffle option, eq options."

When playing music from a media server hit the square or triangle button it will bring up the music toolbar. Shuffle is an option belive me I do this all the time. Enjoy!!
