HMV reports healthy console sales all around, PS3 exceeds

Popular retailer HMV reports that every console is selling as expected. Nope, no flamebait here. This is an opportunity for all of us to pat one another on the back. Let's break down how the store reports each console is performing. We'll start with our namesake, of course.

  • The PlayStation 3 is meeting sales expectations, sometimes exceeding them! When games start dropping, sales are anticipated to improve. If the price drops, they expect an even larger sales boost.
  • The Wii is, as always, in high demand. However, Nintendo has upped the ante and supplies are reportedly starting to stabilize.
  • Microsoft's Xbox 360, despite being on the market for a lot longer than the competition, is still performing well. Like with the PS3, sales boosts are expected should the pricing for the console change.

Hats off, all around. We're all doing well (some more than others) and we all deserve praise for actually having a gaming market where three consoles are all doing relatively well. It's impressive. Perhaps the HMV spokesperson Tim Ellis put it best: "From a retail and customer perspective it's great to have three games heavyweights relatively matched and vying for market domination. This creative tension is leading to fantastic innovative technology and brilliant games."

1. It is kind of pointless to talk about sales meeting expectations when they don't give any actual numbers. What if they only expected to sell 1 but sold 2? Or expected to sell 100,000 but sold ½ million? Hey Nick in the future get us some real info...thanks in advance.

2. Like the Sony turn in 'lowered production', he did not lower the production because we still want to ship 10million of them by the end of the year.
But with still over 2 million 800$ costing black baxes around the world waiting to make some loss it's understandable that they want to shift production to a point in the future when production will be cheaper.
At least we have no shortage on Blue leds now.

3. Jimmy,
That 82,000 you are speaking of is only North America and in a month of no new tiles released. 360 sales haven't even hit 10M much less 11M.(according to vgcharts.org). MS was counting defective exchanges as new sales so the bloated number is falling back down to reality.
Sure, the PS3 has hit a slow patch. But now that media streaming is available and great games coming down the pipe, the PS3 will bounce back.

4. The 360 still hasn't gone past the 10 million mark. Even with the Elite. As it stands the elite could be the worst desicion Microsoft made. I miss the good ole days when there was only one console not THREE!

I can't wait till fall when some real games and news start popping up.

5. I own the two on the left ;)

I need to be convinced before I spring for the one on the right.

6. I love these kinds of pointless discussions, hehe, I really do. one person says 10 mil, one says 11, one says "replacement consoles" and so on. Now as for the replacement numbers for 360, please remember that the 360 has a defective rate of about 3-4% so even if they did include replacements that's still impressive. PS3 defective rate is climbing every day, and the PS2 launched with over 8% failure when it launched as well. If you want to talk about replacements, do you really think that the millions of PS2s still selling are new customers. right, it's suckers replacing their 2nd or 3rd ps2. Don't forget that Sony got busted for lying to their shareholders about the number of consoles sold, the number we see is not installed base it's total number shipped to stores. 360 is claiming almost 11 mil sold, but have shipped close to 14 mil. See they give both numbers, not just the shipped numbers. The only reason why the WII numbers are correct is because every unit shipped is sold. Anyways that's all from me. Theres no need to fight over who sold more, I think all 3 consoles are doing well, and it's nice to see all 3 not worrying for once. Good luck to all.
