The first six months show PS3 lagging behind everything

PlayStation 2 is one of the most successful consoles of all time. Last generation, it devastated its competition, with Xbox claiming a very distant second, and Nintendo's Gamecube trailing behind at third. Interestingly, the first six months of sales for these consoles show a similar pattern: PS2, followed by Xbox, followed by Gamecube. While correlation does not imply causality, these figures certainly show that the interest a product garners within its first six months can be quite important.

Fast-forward to today. PS3 has suffered a crucial blow last month, and with fewer than a dozen games coming out in the next month, the immediate future does not look much brighter. Infendo (a Nintendo fan site) has constructed a graph, pointing out PS3's lackluster momentum in its first six months. Comparatively, it has been outpaced by last generation's "failures."

What can we garner from this data? Firstly, Sony is going to have to try much harder. Secondly, the PS3 isn't that much farther behind the Xbox 360. Finally, the most startling revelation: people aren't as interested in this new generation of console technology as they were previous year's. A look at Wii's phenomenal success is indicative of the industry moving in a direction that many could not have predicted. As distressing as this information may be to Sony fanboys, we have to remember that the battle is far from over.

1. Well, we could give this info the Sony fanboy spin (and the Sony corp spin), and turn it into "dollar marketshare". That way PS2 would be higher than the Wii, and PS3 would be significantly higher than 360. PS3 would leapfrog almost everything, and 360 would be doing a little better.

2. you probably mean that the PS3 has more to offer, yet i don't get the attitude: pc's deliver the most "bang for the buck"
I mean at the end of the year you'll have a real quad core in stead of one core with some sidecores. (not that it bad or something like that but its getting old technology. After all its a first attempt to 'multicore')

Posted at 11:59AM on May 19th 2007 by Vincent

3. Using the dollar sales number is pretty misleading. Even if you say the PS2 outsold the Wii in the first 6 months in dollar amount alone, remember that every PS2 was sold at a loss, and that loss was even greater for the PS3. The Wii, on the other hand, is sold at a significant profit to Nintendo.

Now let's see, as an investor, who am I going to sink my money into...

4. You know Jeff, you don't have to spin bad news. Look at the damn graph; ps3 is right behind the 360. Know what that is? Bad news for both consoles.

Now, as for ways to spin this as a Sony fanboy:
Marketshare has already been covered, and is a great starter. Then I suggest a strong "well, the 360 didn't even have competition and it didn't sell that much better than the ps3" followed with a "the Wii is for children, and parents are probably buying one for each of their 2.5 kids".
btw, I'm being sarcastic. Everytime I look at the list of games coming out for the ps3 I suddenly don't give a shite about the ps3 sales right now, because I'm going to get to play some damn fine games soon. Even if Sony were the only company making games for the ps3 we'd still get some of the best ones, and the majority of titles are going to be multiplatform anyway.

5. "remember that every PS2 was sold at a loss,"
What? Show some numbers for that one, because this is the first time I've ever heard it.

"Now let's see, as an investor, who am I going to sink my money into..."

6. I did the calculations for the $$ brought in per console:

wii $617,500,000 (at $250)
ps2 $660,000,000 (at $300)
xbx $570,000,000 (at $300)
gcb $308,000,000 (at $200)
360 $553,600,000 (at $400) premium
$415,200,000 (at $300) core
PS3 $762,600,000 (at $600) 80 gb
$635,500,000 (at $500) 20 gb

I don't have the exact numbers for prem/core or 80gb/20 gb, but I did the calculation with only core/20gb and only premium/80gb. There's still a much bigger gap, and Sony clearly had a bigger windfall, moneywise.

7. The Wii is such a problem. It isn't a great console, it's a great gimmick. (I loved mine for about 3 weeks). But it's got that "fad bubble" happening now, which wouldn't really be a cause for concern except the developers are flocking to it. It's going to end up hurting both the 360 and the PS3 as the Wii becomes the 'standard' platform and the truly powerful machines end up with lame Wii ports.

Blech.

My issue with PC gaming is that I like to hang out on the couch to do my gaming. Even if I hook the PC up to the high def tv, I have to deal with mouse and keyboard which isn't convenient from the couch.

I save the PC for playing MMOs, for the most part.

8. right padre /sarcasm

Of course, you're neglecting the fact that you can store digital music, digital video, display digital photo slideshows, play PS1 and PS2 games on it, browse the web, install linux, run [email protected], download full games, download trailers, etc.

The xbox learned some of these features by studying what the PS2 had going for it, including the hdd bay and capitalized on it to an extent. Sony knew the value to adding extra abilities to it's console, and MS and Nintendo followed suit.

9. "remember that every PS2 was sold at a loss,"
nevermind... saturday morning brain fart. Just realized that yes, when launched, it sold at loss. nothing to see here...

10. I bet the PS3 would have leaped over the 360 if it was released a little bit more before christmas and didn't have supply issues.

11. The PS3 didnt have supply issues. How can you leap over anything with a Price like the PS3?? Idiot, next time write it down before you post..

12. --------------
"Finally, the most startling revelation: people aren't as interested in this new generation of console technology as they were previous year's.
--------------

I don't think it suggests that at all. The situation as I see it is that people are just as interested as they've ever been (and probably more) - it's just that the 360 and the PS3 cost way too goddamn much to buy. PS3 is double what the last generation launched at, and 360 isn't far behind. There is an absolute price point beyond which people just won't buy. The huge success of the Wii, I think, is evidence for how much interest there really is in a new console (notice that it's at the top of the list, beyond even last generation's winners).

"15. I bet the PS3 would have leaped over the 360 if it was released a little bit more before christmas and didn't have supply issues."
-------------

As long as we're living in never-never land, it might as well be pointed out that the 360 had far more supply issues than the PS3 ever did. If you factored out supply limitations on both sides, the 360 would be even further ahead.

13. I love how this is a PS3 fanboy site, but everyone in the comments is finding ways to spin things, and taking the opportunity to just outright bash what they shouldn't be.
I'm sure there are a few trolls in here, but it just doesn't make much sense to me.

Not like it matters to me, I have all three consoles, so whatever happens happens.
Its just amusing.

14. How to put this... Okay, I'll be blunt.
Your statistics are wrong mmmkay?
Here are the statistics for 5-29-07?

The Xbox 360 has had 10,770,894 units sold
The Wii has had 7,124,428 units sold
And the PS3 has had 3,104,384 units sold

Why are you giving out false statistics? =/

15. can one of you crazy cats explain to me why this supposed "ass kicking" is so "rightly deserved" and what all of this "sony is arrogant" stuff is all about?

from the way i see it, it was like you had a best friend for a number of years in high school, then they got more popular than you did, and now youre jealous, or upset by the things he's doing, so you kick him when he's down, and claim you're not friends anymore.

bottom line: i added my +1 to the ps3's number, and i am damn glad i did.

Posted at 1:15PM on May 19th 2007 by daniel.

Sure, ill answer your question of why it needs its ass kicked, at the 2005 E3, when Sony announced the PS3, they were arogant, dismissed all the other systems and stated that theirs was going to have better games, online service, and everything else a game sytem could possibly dfo better. They havent shown me any thing yet that I cant get for even better on my 360.

16. "PS3 $762,600,000 (at $600) 80 gb"

When did the 60gb ps3 become the 80gb ps3?
There never has been an 80gb ps3.

17. @ Highimpact1
These are year to date numbers.
@ farking wiiboys
goto your own bullsh!t site with that pathetic little wiimote stuffed up your arse, I am sick of you comparing that toy to my hardware.
I had someone try to tell me that they are all toys, well if my PS3 is a toy then I guess that my 50" HDTV, my Harmon Kardon receiver, my Velodyne sub, and my PC, etc are all toys also. No, they are serious electronics, even the 360 is (I simply don't care for it and despise MS)
As far as this chart goes, it shows that RIGHT NOW the PS3 is selling slightly slower than the 360, as for a price and game point, that's understandable. The fact that the super duper Wii is outselling the 7 yr old PS2, oh boy that really proves something.

19. I have to retract my chart analysis, I read it wrong, sorry. It's for the first 6 mos of each consoles life. Still it says that the PS3's start isn't far behind the 360's and that the less expensive Wii(even more so when calculated in today's dollars) outsold the PS2. I still love my PS3, and will so for many years to come, can you say the same for your console, given their track record of system support? Especially with the xbox180, what new games are coming out for it? I see 5, where the PS2 has 100 plus, my point is the long term support here, that's all. And eventually when the PS3 has the market share, the xbox720(b/c they decided you need new hardware already) will be getting PS3 ports. Don't know if this is what will happen, but it would be funny ;)

20. Sony shipped 13 million games
Microsoft sold 52 million
Nintendo sold 28 million for the Wii

Thats what the Sony PR machine does not talk about, they move money in hardware because its expensive. Yet they hardly move money due to sold software.
So if you would even dare to calculate what money Sony made in total from its customers it would just be another joke in a way to long history of sad jokes.
Oh well the PR machine will keep up finding things:
Average kWH use
data shipped
total hardware surface
...
