Customer choice important to Singstar dev - 350 songs at launch

This morning Paulina Bozek, executive producer of the Singstar series of games, gave a speech at the Nordic game conference about the upcoming Singstar title for the PlayStation 3. Gamesindustry.biz have a full summary of the presentation but, as usual, I'm going to boil it down to what I think are the most interesting points.

Firstly, some numbers. 350 songs at launch, with 100 new ones every month. That should be enough to cover every song from each PS2 Singstar game, plus 100 new ones on day one. Give or take. This fits with the crux of Bozek's speech, that users want a massive amount of choice. As yet, there's no word on how much songs will cost to download.

She goes on to discuss how interactive media is changing - that players are becoming creators and sites like Facebook and YouTube are great indicators of how consumer participation is evolving. Sounds very similar to a certain Mr. Harrison's Game 3.0 speech, don't you think? 'My Singstar Online' will mix all of these sites together to create a communal creative experience.

1. Does anyone know how many songs it will come with? I think it'd be really cool if it just came with credits for 20-30 songs which you could then go online and pick the songs you want.

Or they could even just make the game free and make money off of the song downloads.

2. I don't know why people find interest in this title at all. Its not a game, first off, its just a karaoke. Which can be a LOT of fun at times, don't get me wrong...I love making fun of myself sometimes. But really, we have karaoke bars for that anyways with sometimes over 15,000 songs, a hellofalot of booze, and practically a party going on in front of you at the same time.

Maybe I am just nitpicking but I'd rather goto a karaoke bar for all my karaoke-ing needs.

3. @3

You can make same point about most of wii's games which are great when having many people play together buy extremely boring if not. Just different tastes

4. @Anthony:

You're not too bright are you? The game obviously isn't going to be packaged with 350 songs for free. There will be 350 songs available at launch to buy from the store. My question was clearly how many songs/credits will come with the purchase of the game. That number was never given in this ps3fanboy posting, hence my question.

See how being an asshole online can blow up in your face?

5. Before you guys start slamming karaoke games, remember that Europe and Asia are nuts about karaoke. Here in the US...not so much.

6. @6

yeah apparently people in the US are less embarrased when flailing their arms around like maniacs.... Considering how popular American Idol is i think there should be more singstar penetration soon.

7. @ shase

Wow...sounds like somebody doesn't really like the Wii. Which is odd that you brought it up because nobody mentioned it at all here. Or at least I didn't.
