Xecuter PS3 HDXT HDD adapter debuts...

Our hacker friends over a PS3scene got their mittens on a production sample of Team Xecuter's first foray into the wonderful world of PS3 modding. Their initial entry into the market isn't terribly exciting, but it is useful and functional.

"The Xecuter PS3 HDXT is a caddy type frame that plugs into the PS3 internally where the 2.5" Sata drive would normally slot. You then clip on the matching faceplate and bingo you now have a clean external Sata connection. No frills and no fuss. You can now add any hard drive you wish and connect it any way you wish. We have also designed a simple but cost effective Sata to IDE convertor."

At $20 for the adapter, this is a cheap and elegant solution to your future PS3 storage issues. Who is getting one?

1. Not sure I care for a HD sitting on the shelf next to my ps3... not exactly clean when it's all done, although the panel to cover the HD bay is a nice touch.
Almost there, a great idea with a less than perfect execution in my opinion.

2. Meh. Considering you can plug any USB storage you like into the PS3, what's the point of this product? Is it to make access to the drive difficult by being at the back of the machine instead of conveniently at the front?

3. Hey! That "crummy music" was Muse.

Anyway, I would only invest in something like this if they managed to let me keep using the internal drive AND be able to plug in another drive at the same time.

4. Guys...that looks like a friggin mess.

No thanks. I'll just pop a 120GB from Newegg.com in my 20GB PS3, partition it, add Yellow Dog Linux, and get my MAME freak on.

This guys need to clean that up a bit, go with a black cable, maybe a 3.5" or 2.5" enclosure. Make it look clean.

5. Right now I'd just like to be able to buy another internal drive caddy for my PS3 (the screws stripped) but can I get one off Sony? Nope... despite saying they are available in the manual. Any idea where I can get another caddy?

6. ok, I like the idea, but the execution is sloppy. I just did this, but without the clean cover (Cable just coming out the side of the PS3. I could use this and connect it to my external SATA enclosure. 120 drive is cheaper in the 3.5 variety than the 2.5 (Most cases). Black enclosure with a black cable running between them. Works for me. This way, you can add bigger drives or Raid some together.

7. 3:

I did the USB HDD connection, it was alot slower than the internal and some things will only copy/install to the internal, so using the internal connection for the external drive helps.

8. Stef,

Thanks! I knew I hated the band playing, but just couldn't put my finger on who they were. I saw them back in like 2001 or so when they were on tour with the RHCP and Foo Fighters. They were dropped from that tour two dates later--and for good reason. I was really glad when they got off the stage.
