We already knew the game was going to take on the FF8 approach -- more science-fiction than fantasy (technology-wise, cities with big buildings not made out of wood or thatch or brick). Fine by me. As an aside, I've heard tons of whines about that particular entry into the series and I'd like to hear why it rubbed you the wrong way. Personally, the FF thorn(s) in my side are IX and Mystic Quest. I wouldn't call FF7 sci-fi based because it was one city that was "technologically advanced"... it was more industrialized than sci-fi. FF8 was sci-fi. FF8 had the Gun-Blade. So does XIII. What're the odds?
We also know the battle system is going to be a revamped ATB system -- pushed to its limits as far as speed goes. This, to me, is also a great move. Not sure how many of you dared to demasculinize yourselves with Final Fantasy X-2, but that was easily the greatest rendition of ATB to-date. If they're going to make it faster with XIII, I'm on board. Just so Lightning isn't girly like those three ladies were. She doesn't seem to be.
The game is being built from the ground up with the PS3 in mind. The high-definition capabilities, the Blu-ray, the multi-core mumbo jumbo... it's all needed to run this game in the way Square-Enix desires it. Online? They're thinking about it. Wonder what they'd do. Either way, expect a whole new level of expression on character's faces and gestures.
Mini-games are a possibility, but they'd probably be dragged out into their own full-length releases. Hopefully, these will be cheaper and on the PS-Store, because I won't dole out a constant stream of $60 for mini-games-gone-full.
There's a bit more info in the scans, but we're not going to go into every title and what's already known about them. If you want to play a little bit of catch-up, go ahead and check out the scans. We're going to find some news not relating to Square-Enix.

I really don't have a problem with Magic and Sci-Fi mixed. In fact, I think it's an awesome idea. I even liked the whole steam-punk/magic RPG that came out a while back even though it was full of bugs and barely playable. It adds depth to character creation and customization. Instead of limiting yourself to "elemental" powers, you can have those, and add gizmos, gadgets, and technology into the mix, even using Technology to harness or amplify magic.
Anyway, I'm sure there are purists out there with a different opinion. As long as it's not all fluffy and homo-erotic I'm sure it will be added to my collection.

I agree, the FF8 Junction system was pure genius. And the card game was fun, as long as you didn't accidentally pick up any crap rules for it (Random will make you lose your mind). However, the fact that monsters in every area leveled up along with you was TOTAL crap. It's the only FF where leveling up is discouraged...dumb...

FF8 was one of my favorites because of the Junction System, the GFs, and the card game, as well. The cutscenes were great, too, and the intro to the game with the orchestra overlay is timeless.

FF VIII was so close to being the best game in the series (IMHO) the combat system all the features and an amazing story, the only thing that held it back was the drawing system got soooooo effing boring and tedious.

FF8 was really fun but about halfway through, the story became very hard to follow and kind of stupid. I think that's why it gets a bad rap. It had great graphics, gameplay, and music though. I remember it was a big deal at the time how Square managed to blend polygons together so you got smooth-looking characters instead of everyone looking like a bunch of triangles and rectangles mashed together (as in FF7).

FF8 was one of my least favorites because of the battle system, weapon system, Junction system, Draw systems, GFs, storyline, lack of good character development, fragmented story, terrible party models in battle (FF7's looked better) and because Rinoa was a bitch. There, I said it.

No Friggen Way, Dude. I loved the fact that the monsters got stronger with you. It made leveling up all the more challenging. Not just, Man you kick ass, no you kick ass because the monsters got stronger with you, And you still place down the ass whoopin.
I also agree with the junction system. It's fun to have your character have a 1 second wait time, immunity to certain magic and be able to inflict status effects per move. I always wanted another FF8 game, with a better junction system that allowed you to place more than just one "set" as I named it per character. :( Hummmmmmmm sigggghhh depressionnnnn

That whole monsters getting stronger thing that you love so much could also make certain enemies near unbeatable, even though you may be a really high level. Is that a good thing in your opinion?
Still though, I agree it was and is a great game.
