Before we even get into the awesome list about what Phil Harrison spoke about, we have to quote the original article's opening sentence because it's so inspiring: "PS3 may have cemented its place in history as the most successful home console launch ever in the UK, but Sony World Wide Studios boss Phil Harrison says that there has never been a product launch like it in any sector." Bragging rights, anyone? No? Too selfish and rude? Okay, well, still. Fantastic.Harrison's statements can be split into three long quotes, which we'll summarize below because we know you've got other stuff to get done. Right?
- 165,000 units sold, equating to £100 million worth of business over the course of 2 days. He said: "This not only makes it the most successful games hardware launch, we think it is the most successful consumer launch of a product in the UK."
- Sony is dumbfounded by their own success: "We have been in the office scratching our heads trying to think of a consumer product that has achieved that level of consumer sales in such a short period of time. If anyone can think of a UK product launch that has raised this amount of business in such a short period of time I'd love to know because we can't think of one."
- Out-of-stock? Paychecks coming in? Says the Phil: "We are already seeing across Europe out of stock situations where retailers re re-ordering. It was always our strategy to have a good supply. There's never been a launch of a console in Europe that's had a million pieces of hardware sold in or available. We've kept some back in order to continue to supply the market."
Good stuff, Phil Harrison. What do you guys think? Was the launch a failure, or was the media quick to hop back onto the Sony-hate wagon and cover the failure of launch events and not the actual sales numbers/data/facts?

I take exception to Phil saying :
"We have been in the office scratching our heads trying to think of a consumer product that has achieved that level of consumer sales in such a short period of time. Phil...spend some time getting the games in the hopper and driving your costs (thus price) down as soon as possible....Spend some time correcting the fairly horrible launch in the US/Japan...Drive some support behind the PSP that is the #1 console launch in UK of all time and you've left lying on the side of the road...you can worry about your place in history later in the lifecycle...mkay?

well, they spend $180 for it... those are CRACK prices!
anyway, you can easily upgrade your PS3 HD with any latop HD... and for $180, you can get a drive much bigger than $120

Colin,
They ARE fixing the launch issues from US/Japan. There were a number of problems at launch like, low stock, not a lot of games, and missing features. These have all been addressed already, or are being addressed currently.
There are now a TON more really solid games already. The launch line-up wasn't rockin' (though I love me Resistance something fierce), but look at all the stuff out now. Motorstorm, fl0w, Oblivion, VF5, etc. There are no longer stock issues in the US, and most of the 'missing' features have been added via firmware updates (background downloading, woot!).
Phil isn't going to be able to make more games happen instantly, nor is he going to be able to drop the price over night (well he's software too, not a hardware guy so he's unrelated to that). So I don't think its fair to criticize him over basking in some positive Playstation 3 news.
Sony doesn't exactly get a lot of 'positive news days', you know?
-Colin (the other one) ;)

This is good news. I like Phil. He is one of the few Sony reps who doesn't lie constantly. He tries his hardest to answer the hard questions and he always gives me something to look forward to on my PS3. He is one of the reasons I follow Sony. Bill Gates gives me nightmares and Peter Moore scares me. :)

..Are you serious? Go to a store and ask for a 2.5" SATA hard drive.

As I posted elsewhere......
CLEARLY what we are seeing here is that the consumer saw what utter cock-ups MS and Nintendo presided over with the launch of their consoles and did not want to take a risk with the PS3 (despite promises from SCEE that European stock would be huge). So they ordered online.
Mine came in a van with a polite delivery man, and I signed for it on my doorstep with a nice hot, sweet cup of tea in one hand. Better than what the 360- and Wii-boys went through - probably one of a 100 people queuing in the rain like poor people in Soviet Russia, in the faint hope of getting one of the couple of dozen units actually in stock....
And still the 360- and Wii-boys mock Sony! Plus ca change.

Massive, check the owners manual. It's a 2.5" SATA hard drive...I don't remember if it required a specific RPM, but I wouldn't think it would matter. Any HDD meeting those requirements should work.
I think the media jumped on the hate wagon. The problem I have with the media's take on Sony and the PS3 is that they are hating Sony for the wrong reasons lately, such as trying to blame stock prices or low sales, and the lack of original games early in the the cycle, saying it makes them less of a company, blah blah.
Sony's real problems are being out of touch with gamers, being too cocky, providing shoddy consumer products, ramming DRM down our collective gullets, charging high prices for low-quality goods, etc. The PS3 is only a small portion of what Sony has done poorly in the last several years. Think DRM-malware, exploding batteries, and poor customer service (on DRE) for a few.
Sony used to be a Premium brand pre-2000, but ever since then...many of their products have taken a serious dive. Most like it's do to quantity over quality in production and featuresets.

Ummm...upgrade yours with standard readily available (thus not over priced and DRMd like the other console's) 2.5 drive or just plug an external drive into your USB port.

Suicide Ninja:
I don't know what's so "poor" about the PS3, it's not getting something resembling "the ring of death" like the 360.
I have both consoles, and you know I'm not lying because you have my gamertag (and my PlayStation ID is the same), and I'm on my third 360 and on my third HDD. I'm afraid of turning it on and leaving it on for a while, especially after my warranty expires in 3 months or so. I haven't really been able to use it much since I mostly play Arcade games, and they are useless without the hard drive, and as I told you, I've had to wait two times to get a new console, and two times to get an HDD that actually worked; it took a long while with the last one, especially because Microsoft refused to pay for the shipping of their failed HDD (it seems that those 99 bucks for the measly 13 Gigabytes aren't spent on quality), until they agreed to send me a game (pne I don't even like), PGR3. So I pretty much spent almost 6 months without playing it. That's shitty quality, and shitty consumer service. Apparently warranty doesn't mean "free". Regardless, before my "warranty" expires, I'm going to exchange the old premium for a new Elite, if they are indeed more reliable (And that should give me a new warranty too).
On the other hand, maybe PS2 was "poorly done", although I disagree, I knew more people with problems with the original Xbox (Even though it had a smaller installed base), but who knows, maybe that's just my luck. Anyway, even assuming PS2 was made of shitty hardware, PS3 doesn't seem to be following those footsteps. I haven't heard of the massive outbreak of dying consoles that plagued the 360 at launch, and still does.

For over 2 weeks now, PS3 has been in the top 5 (#1 at some point) on the Amazon UK PC & Video Games bestseller list. I would call that a success--at least from a commercial point of view. Considering the Euro price, I would even call that an amazing success. I mean, it's selling more than the Sims and DS!

I think the news is tremendously positive for Sony for two reasons
1. Great sales despite poorly attended launch events -Why is this a positive?
Because THAT shows how deeply important "online" has become.
AND because, despite the "inferior to Live" perception, if Sony does its development well, they could steal a massive lead in this field based on Home, LBP and FREE multiplayer.
MS' paid gold system has barely a few million subscibers (assuming half of the 6m Live users are Gold). With, say, 8-10 million PS3s by end-2007, we could easily see a new ruler of the online world.
2. A new found maturity for the "PR disaster" firm Sony, they could have understocked to create an illusion of success - but instead this is the FIRST major launch in years that was smooth for Customers.

Good points Bloggy mc blogger... (too lazy to scroll up)
People are often way too hasty when viewing the console. I'm happy the PS3 is now contending even in the minds of even those who doubted it.
I now have NO doubts that this amazing machine will even outlast the PS2 and do MORE than what its parent console did to the gaming world!
Still concerned about games? Go to IGN.com PS3's upcoming games list is something you really might want to take a look at...

I normally research and ensure the product I am going to buy is worth the money. I made the stupid error of buying my son a ps3 based on the past success of Sony consoles. He has over 200 ps2 games none of which play on the new console! Where are the new games for the new machine? Had I been better informed I would never have bought. I hope Phil Harrison's success continues. Anyone wanting to buy a new console, take my advice and look at what Sony's competitors are doing. I am a very dissatisfied customer.
