FFXIII exclusivity... under discussion? A different view

For some reason, we feel like this news is a little older than "6:36AM"... probably read it in a few applications. But we're not here to talk about them! We're here to discuss Georga Fornay's comments in a French-language newspaper about Final Fantasy XIII. Who is he? President of Sony Computer Entertainment France. What'd he say? Let's eavesdrop.

"The development costs of games have exploded, and it has become more difficult to have exclusives, outside of our own games. But we have for launch day [in France] 30 games, including MotorStorm, Resistance: Fall of Man, and Virtua Fighter 5. Moreover, we are expecting 200 games [for the PS3] by the end of 2007... As far as Final Fantasy XIII goes, I can tell you that the exclusivity is in discussion."

Some may twist this into thinking that Sony might be losing exclusivity to the coveted Square-Enix title. We remain cautiously optimistic. Perhaps Square was looking at going to other consoles, but Sony realizes they need this game (need is a tricky word, but let's go with it). They tell Square to sit down, enjoy some brunch. Let's discuss. Basically, instead of assuming the title was exclusive and that may be changing, let's assume it was not exclusive, but Sony is finally making that jump. Besides, there were never those "Only on PS2!" stickers when Final Fantasy X, X-2, and XII were released. Those were all over games like Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volleyball. Know what we're saying? How do you feel about this?

1. the pain never stop for the PS3... what significant exclusive games are left?

2. My thoughts -
1. I wouldnt mind F13 going to 360 - but I wish they would make up their mind and TELL PEOPLE what they intend - this practice of dripping small bits of news is just torture.
2. The impact would be quite negative - but more psychological than in terms of sales. Think of it this way - would the xbots who XBOX1 instead of PS2 despite the latter having so many great RPGs, really care? On the other hand if you are a RPG lover - would you choose a 360 and lose the chance to play all those golden oldies - KH, FF 7-12, Suikoden, etc?
3. That being said, the impact would be really bad for us - the occupants of PS3fanboy. can you imagine the hordes of gloating xbots? I probably wont look at this site for a week if such a news breaks :)

3. Sony still owns ~10% stock in Squeenix. I'm sure that Sony wants them to do as well as they can. Funny though...Sony profitting from Xbox fanboys.

4. FF13 Is really the only game I'll miss that I wanted since the transition from PS2 to 360. If it came over that would be great news for me. And on another note, I don't remember any PS2 games ever having a "Only on PS2!". I thought that was just GC and XBOX.

5. Nah i take this to mean that Sony realise the development costs are getting large, SE dont want to lose any money, so Sony sit down, have a chat with SE, slip them a brown paper bag full of cash and support them like they did with Guerilla and the development of KZ2.

Posted at 12:42PM on Mar 22nd 2007 by Naaiif

6. Maybe sony should bite its lips and buy out SE....

7. #7 That is the worst possible thing that could happen.

People are taking what this guy said out of context. Its at the point now where they are sitting down with Square and talking about the deal to make it exclusive. They will not let exclusivity on this title slip.

8. I dont know that FF13 appearing on other consoles (360,wii,or even PCs)matters outside of the fanboy community. And when I say fanboy, i mean all fanboys.

9. Exclusivities hurt the gamers, but help the big 3 corporations that make the games.

Naturally Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo franchises will never go multi-platform but other than that 3rd party games should go multi-platform. If the third parties (especially good ones like Capcom, Square, and Konami) make more money then that means they will make us more games. Gamers win.

Dead Rising
Lost Planet

All should go multiplatform!

10. I kinda hope it goes to the 360 then they can do a side by side comparison and people can see how the PS3 destroys it :)

11. Final Fantasy lost me years ago, however I like the changes in the last one. Personally, I am looking for every reason to buy a PS3 but these talk of exclusive leaving keep putting me off. I think that SONY will try to keep this one or at least make it time exclusive. I do believe the PS3 once the full power is realized will be just a bit better than the 360 but the cost for developers isn't worth it. Sony will have to pay alot to keep this one. Didn't Square sign on to use the Unreal Engine?

12. 12. you wrote Exclusivities hurt the gamers and I have to say they do not.

Why if every game is on every system why do I need to buy more then one system.

When I was young Sega and Nintendo both had great games but many only stayed on one system.

So you see what I am saying if every game is on each system what is the point of there being more then system.

I want to games and to say that you think it is better to be on each system only hurts gamers and does not help them.

Joystiq even talked about this the other day.

So I want to see games that are on only one system over them all that way the game becomes more special.

What a dumb comment, since nothing that has come out on POS3 has been better than the 360, and in most cases are much worse than the 360. Sorry, your $600 did not buy you more power, just a higher bill on your credit card!

MGS will be 360 bound by mid 2008, since it won't really sell that many PS3 systems when it comes out in the fall, unless of course $ony does knock off $100, then it may finally be worth it!

14. @14

Well, considering that the 360 has been out longer, of course it would look better. But if you compare launch titles, then the PS3 would be the likely winner. The games only got good on the 360 like a year after it was released. The PS3 just needs some time to show what it can do.

15. @Paul R.

You seem to forget all the problems Microsoft had with games and it's console during launch and the few months after. I guess that is a fanboy's perogative to have selective memory when insulting another console.

By the way, grow up. The "POS3" remark is just unoriginal and childish.

16. @ Geoff Gibson

Dead Rising
Lost Planet

All should go multiplatform!"

Multiplatform as in the 360, ps3 and pc, right? Because we all know neither of those games could run on the Wii. poor little Wii, and it's poor graphics card. If all games went multplatform, the Wii would get hurt.

@ Jason B.

Agreed on the problems. The ps3 just needs more time. Problem is the one thing microsoft did't have to deal with was the 600 dollar price tag. and losing 200 dollars p/c. Sure microsoft lost money, but not that much.

17. i'm betting that the FF series was never exclusive to Sony's systems by any sort of contract. therefore Square could have ported the games over to other systems if they wanted. I think this exec's comments suggest that Sony is trying to contractually make this game exclusive to the PS3, which would mean we're a bit closer to having FF13 all to ourselves than before.

18. Don't quote me on this but I have heard from the 1up show (i think) that Final Fantasy from VII and up are Sony exclusive because Sony and Square made a deal or something. Which would explain why square didn't make a final fantasy sequel on the Nintendo platforms yet and instead made Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

Personally, I just don't care anymore. After Virtua Fighter went mulitplatform, then Devils May Cry, Kojima saying MGS4 is PS3 exclusive "SO FAR", etc. I've now become numb to these "big blows to Sony". I'm still getting these multiplatform games for the system I'm more convertible with. For example, Devils May Cry & MGS4 I prefer on the PS3. Splinter Cell and Army Of Two I prefer on the 360. I do not care for those useless achievements, those things are never going to make me choose 360 version over the PS3 version.

19. I'm quite sure it'll be going to 360, due to the fact that even FF XI (which no one even liked) did well on 360, I don't see any reason why Square WOULDN'T want too. I hate FF anyway, but I'll take any shot at a PS3 I can. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

20. @ Jason B: "The POS3 remark is unoriginal"

So is the name "Playstation 3". Or Playstation 2, for that matter.
