3. Whats the performance like on YD? I want to try it out, but I want to wait until MythTV can easily be set up and perform well.
And I heard fedora sucked. Had ~pentium 800mhz performance. I can't imagine being able to run 1280*768 HD video with that.

4. ive installed both (fedora and ydl) and ydl definitely runs faster... however, neither move "like an 800mhz". they are both extremely quick. i would say comparable (just rule of thumb and eyeing it) to something closer to a 2.4-2.6ghz p4. very quick... ive seen quicker... but MORE than capable of anything you want to throw at it.
e17 in yellowdog is an amazing window manager. im loving it.
sony still needs to unass some support for the rsx chip (its running in frame buffer)... so its good, but on extreme situations like attempting to watch an hd rip, it will cough every once in a while. as soon as drivers get worked out for the gpu... it will be heaven.
also of note... wireless isnt there yet. that is supposedly top priority with yellowdog and they will have something thrown together shortly... but if you need wireless, its not there. (trying to save people the time)

5. can anyone tell me how much this ps3 yellow dog OS software costs??

6. Thanks Microdot,
Thanks for the info. Good to hear the digg.com '800 mhz' quote was BS. I think I'll wait a bit longer, but maybe in the next couple months the last little issues will be worked out.

10. This is looking rather nice, It seems like a pretty competent machine when it comes to doing normal computer tasks. Why complain about some of the things the ps3 webbrowser cant do when you can run linux, and have FIREFOX, with all the bells and whistles. I am not totally familiar with linux, but it seems to not be that difficult to understand if one has ever used windows.

11. I have ydl installed on my 20gb ps3 and while it's fast, there's also a lack of RAM for the number of applications I like to have open. For instance, the ydl ps3 image comes with eclipse preinstalled, but it will take almost 100% of the available memory (you WILL be going to swap) to launch it. Ok, so maybe it's a java thing, but most users are comfortable with 1-2gb of ram nowadays and the PS3 wont cut it. I've also tried installing gmplayer to play videos from my network share, and while it works well for standard playback, the lack of RSX / Nvidia hardware drivers doesn't allow scaling. Full screen mode is just the regular video with a thick black border around it. Maybe this will be fixed in the future through a special fix / utilizing the spes, but right now it's not very good. Good luck to all those who want to install mythtv etc. I'm hoping there will be more developments as more users start installing / playing with the ydl ps3 dist.

13. "hmph.....i said mount"
lol this guy is great. and i thought i was a token black guy! and i do agree that Morris Brown is a great song. if you dont have Idlewild, get it. music makes the world go 'round!
but anyway, i digress. when i do finally get a hold of a PS3 of my own i am pretty sure i will load it up with linux. my roommate bought a PS3 the other day (that i happened to find for him at walmart. his cashflow is a little better than mine at the present...) but he has no idea about any of that linux stuff let alone what the PS3 can do anyway so its just videos like this for me for now. its very interesting to see what your $600 investment will get you though. you get a fantastic gaming console, a full-fledged linux platform, and a very impressive media hub. that does make that price easier to swallow. now there are a few more things that i would like to see in a video such as this. like how the linux platform will work with the bluray drive and how it would handle the installing of various linux apps. very impressive and informative video. cant wait until i can get my hands on a PS3 of my own.
