Grab your Yellow Dog Linux mumbo jumbo in two days!

By now, you guys know I'm not exactly the voice of intellect when it comes to operating systems and hardware specs -- even so, I'm going to try to do this bit justice. Linux's Yellow Dog 5.0 will be ready for you to download Install and Source ISO's on the 27th from www.ydl.net. To be exact, on the 27th you can "Download Install & Source ISOs via YDL.net Enhanced." Perhaps my wording was off.

What does this do, exactly? It appears that it pretty much updates the website for you, allowing you to access a full-fledged mailing list as opposed to the help desk Linux has used for eight years. Great? Great. I've not had the pleasure of using Linux, so if anyone wants to throw in some extra jargon explaining this or that, knock yourself out. All we know is that if you've got a PS3, you had better keep your Yellow Dog up to date! Why wouldn't you, after all?

1. I think linux on the ps3 is cool, but most people don't care enough--or don't know how to use linux enough. Even then, they'll only use it once they find out they can use emulators and say the ps3 is the ultimate gaming console because it can play anything.

Thats me not being a fanboy because this gen I'm pro pc.

2. can someone tell me were i can download all the files i need to install it ( ONCE IT COMES OUT ) for free?

3. unless something has changed, the ydl enhanced area is a subsciprtion/donation spot to grab early releases. ydl for the ps3 will be available freely to the public around xmas time.

in the meantime, for those wanting to play around... just about any of the ppc builds will work on the ps3. fedora is probably the most popular.

rickjs: i think the more exciting part is that this will be streamlined. its only a matter of time before people start to grab ahold of its capabilities... for example, drivers for the controller... a streamlined rom gui... etc. roms will be a big draw, because after all... it is a game console. but (and thinking outloud here) the ability to jump into a homebrew type situation, and mimic the ps3 front end inside of linux, giving the system a complete and total 1 spot to do it all... email.. web... office apps... and best of all ps3 games... would be the ultimate. given the time, it can and will happen... just a matter of how many people jump on it.

4. I'm crazy excited about Linux on the PS3 - and yeah emulation is one of them.

I'm going to install a larger HD and then setup a linux partition with MythTV and MAME. Mmmm xvid support. At that point, I can ditch my media center PC (MythTV is better anyway) and have an insane MAME library available at the press of a button.

To me that seems insanely cool to be able to turn the PS3 into a full fledged media center / arcade cabinet with hundreds (thousands?) of games. F the virtual console. :P

People already have other forms of linux running on the PS3 though. What makes this release special? I know that Yellow Dog for a long time was the only linux release for PowerPC chips (the precurser to the Cell) so is this actually going to be optimized for the PS3?

5. I hope they have an accelerated graphics driver ......

Posted at 4:28AM on Nov 26th 2006 by Psycho

6. YDL will NOT include an accelerated graphics driver. It's been listed in their FAQ since day one but people either don't look or seem to ignore it.

"At this point in time, YDL runs in framebuffer mode on the PS3, meaning there is no 2D nor 3D accelleration nor support for OpenGL. The x.org driver is fully functional in its framebuffer mode, offering quality support for a wide variety of hi-def televisions and computer monitors that comply with the PS3 video output signals. "

7. Do you reckon someone will hack this linux build to play pirated PS3 games?

Posted at 9:42AM on Nov 26th 2006 by TheWakeUpCall

8. What PS3 games? It plays Mario Brothers, which is better than any PS3 game.
