MGS4 on the 360? Let's debate some random rumors!

People over at Konami HQ have long been pressuring Hideo Kojima, mind behind the Metal Gear games, to go multi-platform. Until the time of this writing, he has remained adamant about staying solely on Sony platforms (although MGS2 did get onto the XBox after some time). So, what's the rumor, eh? Check out the cover of EGM. Zoom in or whatever on the smaller print right above Master Chief's head. MGS4 on the 360? Couldn't be! What's the proof? We won't know until we get our mitts on this magazine (I'll check my mailbox incessantly -- I'm that addicted to gaming "news"). Unless this magazine is out... don't think so. Last one we got had a huge Gears of War spread.

Well, let's try our best to keep this civilized, but... what do you guys think would happen if Metal Gear goes multi-platform? Is it truly (along with Squeenix -- debatable) the only thing keeping Sony afloat? How important are the (trite, meaningless phrase warning) killer apps for each system? Is it enough to have large quantities of "pretty good" games, or do you have to have one "I need this game right now or I'll kill you" among a sea of mediocre garbage? Ready? Go.

21. MGS4 may eventually be released for the 360, it would likely be a substance type version a year after. Also MGS4 isnt the only exclusive. Tekken and Virtua Fighter, for the fighting fans. Heavenly Sword and God of War 2 action people? FF13 and versus 13 are so far PS3 exclusive. Squeenix said they are going more multiplatform but they didnt say that final fantasy itself was gonna be multiplatform. Heck they have been releasing the older ones on nintendo handhelds for years and released 11 on Xbox. But the traditional final fantasy's have been PS based since 7. As far as 360 goes its a rushed out system with a ton of flaws, and microsoft squandered a year long lead in the console war by not having any killer aps out there. As far as halo goes I'll wait for the PC port, same as Fable. Shooters are best on PC any way. As for Xbox Live, Sony has a internet set up, and besides an odd front end based on the PSP, it will be as good as Xbox Live without the need to pay for a gold membership to get access to anything worthwhile. The PS3 probably will still win the console war, however it just wont dominate like the PS2 did. And price wise 360 isnt worth 400, if the PS3 is worth 600 remains to be seen.

22. I think people give the MGS series more credit than it deserves in the "console war."

Don't get me wrong, I think the Metal Gear series is amazing. However, When compared to the Gran Turismo series, it's nothing for playstation sales. Gran Turismo was the top seller on the PSX, and Gran Turismo 3 was the top seller on the PS2. Factor in Gran Turismo 2, 4, and Tourist Trophy, and you've got Sony's killer apps.

Secondly, EGM has a history of horrid rumors. No matter what it says, I'm gonna have to take it with an insane amount of salt.

Lastly, if it is released for the 360, it'd probably be a time-exclusive thing like Resident Evil 4 was. MGS4 isn't coming out till mid-late '07, or even early '08. By that time, there should be a relatively high amount of PS3s in the market, so there will be plenty of people willing to get it.

MGS: Twin Snakes wasn't done by Konami, it was by Silicon Knights, so I wouldn't consider it a "true" port. MGS2 for XBox didn't sell particularly well. And with the lacking 360 market in Japan, I don't see MGS4 coming to 360 anytime soon (though I probably won't be too surprised if it is).

23. Have fun waiting for a Halo 3 port to PC...it's going on about 3 years before Halo 2 finally hits the PC. If you are willing to waith 3 years...good luck.

First of all. The PS3 and the 360 are NOT the same. How do I know this? The PS3 IS NOT OUT YET! I love how the xbots tout the 360 is the SAME as the PS3 even though the PS3 has come out almost a year later and has newer technology built-in. Remember how convenient is was for M$ and the bots to criticize Sony's plan for 1080p games and the need for extra space on the BD-ROM device, only to come out later and say, "Looky! We're going to let you buy a hd dvd add-on."

The fact of the matter is that the Xbots are worried that they will be COMPELLED to buy a PS3 after it hits the market. A lot of the grumbling has to do with them trying to justify their 360 purchase. Don't worry xbots. You can always look at this like this: The 360 is a console that you could buy to tide you over until the real next-gen console came out: the PS3! You know it's true.

I don't know why xbots even come to this site. If you love your 360? Then why are you coming over to www.ps3fanboy.com, hmmmm?

Xbots remind me of the kid that has a new toy beacues he wants new friends. Yet, no one cares about his new toy. So, the kid goes out and tries to take other kids stuff in order to gain popularity. LOL! When will the xbots get it throuhg their heads. True PS3 fans don't care about the 360. Geeesh!

Oh, and about the exclusive game topic...

Listen. Game companies will always look out for the healh of their company. Some will come and some will go. That's just the nature of the business. But let be clear about the nature of "exclusive" games. NEW GAME FRANCHISES WILL BE INVENTED FOR THE PS3! It's called creativity! It's not like an exclusive is like some rare gemstone that only one exist. No. Games are like music. They are like novels. They are like movies. New ideas come and they get created into new games. And Sony will be making new and better franchies througout the lifetime of the PS3. Many of the 1st party and 2nd party. Those of which will never be on the 360. Boo hoo! Go away and play your halo 3,4,5!

Here's an example. Do you honestly think that Halo 4 and DMC5 will have the same appeal 3-4 years down the line? I mean, come on. After a while a theme gets old and tried. New franchies have to be created. This is why Gears of War was created. M$ knew that touting "Halo 3" was not enough. The "Halo" luster is wearing off.

This goes the same for Sony's older titles. This is why it was so very important that Sony put out the best hardware possible. It lays the ground work for the new great francihes that will be created in the coming years.

25. get over it (Msg #4) says:
[[4. if you want a good laugh go check out the joystiq comments section on their coverage of this. there's someone over there claiming it as an absolute fact that MGS4 will never see the light of day as a PS3 title. he's promising us all that it will be released on any other console but the PS3 because the PS3 will be sitting on the store shelves unsold and a complete failure.

it's funny in a sad delusional way how absolutely sure of himself he is.]]

He's referring to me.
I said this a good month ago in a forum about MGS4's shaky future on the PS3 platform.

The post was originally entitled
"Metal Gear Solid 4 will NOT go to the Playstation 3"
http://www.n-philes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29797

The moderators true to form with the general insecure climate of the site added in "In my crazy opinion," to my title as if my reasoning was just so incomprehensible.
And many of the posters chimed in ridiculing my take to which I grinned a big smile in return. For you see I KNOW what I'm talking about. And I am unafraid of making a call long before it's popular to accept.

My reasoning, PS3 fans, is that developers are getting worried about PS3's ability to sell. And are starting to look to other sources to make money selling games.
The mistakes Sony has & continues to make on this project does not help matters.

"Worried about PS3 selling? Are you on Tyrone Biggums on Redball?!"

Well let's take the story of one WWE Smackdown Vs. Raw 2007, the latest of a long series that has been a PS exclusive since the PS1. Wrestling games regardless of quality are big sellers with big fanbases. It IS a bit like the sports genre. THQ & WWE on PS2 made terrific sales.

The game is scheduled to release in November this year. It releases on the PS2, the PSP, the XBox 360...wait WHAT?! The 360??? It has broken exclusivity!! How can this be?!

But wait guys that's not the BAD part. You ready?
It does *NOT* release on the PS3. Does NOT release.
And the PS3 is scheduled to release in...November!

Why is this happening?
Why would a heretofore PS exclusive release on Sony's outgoing console, its companion handheld, its competition's next-gen console (breaking long-time exclusivity) but NOT on Sony's OWN next-gen console???

PS2 is still a strong seller continuing to consistently stay #2 on the weekly Japanese charts under the DS phenom. PSP though not executing what they originally planned is still selling fairly well considering who they're going up against, best contender to Nintendo's handheld juggernaut yet. XBox 360 though also not selling what it should be is STILL selling something.

So I can only conclude that THQ is worried about PS3's sellability. That title woulda been a GREAT launch title for Sony. It doesn't make sense to skip the PS3 in these circumstances.

Then you got Square-Enix (i discuss this in that forum's thread toward the end) sounding cagey about supporting the PS3.
http://www.joystiq.com/2006/09/26/s...ryone/#comments

Kingdom Hearts may not remain a PS3 exclusive.
Says the company VP to the Wall Street Journal:
"We don't want PlayStation 3 to be the overwhelming loser, so we want to support them. But we don't want them to be the overwhelming winner either, so we can't support them too much."

3rd party is shifting.
And when you factor in the competition notably Wii in Japan & Wii/XBox 360 in Europe Sony is fighting an uphill battle that if they don't get enough traction they will lose the 3rd party support which have made their systems successful all along.
If they lose 3rd party support, they're done in this industry. They cannot survive an exodus like Nintendo did in the N64 days when they had to rely upon 1st party to carry them through.

MGS4 will probably be out by 2008. That's a long 14 months or so with strong competition to face. Konami & Kojima may flip the script & take that masterpiece to another platform if PS3 is not successful. Not just multi-platform it, forego PS3 altogether. It's not impossible that that can happen. And Sony's put up so many roadblocks to allow this system to move that I don't see MGS4 staying on that platform.

PS's power comes from dominating the marketshare. That's 3rd party stays with them primarily. As soon as that goes the story is totally different & unlike Nintendo their first party titles don't have the same pull.
The fact that 360 is so similar in approach to Sony's system for less price means they'll steal a lot Sony's thunder. Wii being so unique will create an avenue that may inspire developers to redesign games in Wii's image.

I didn't come up with my read out of my ass. I'm looking at what's going on & using a little bit of game history to devise these conclusions.

'get over it' thinks I'm just blowing smoke. But just wait until New Year's Day 2008 & remember what I told you here. By that time the story will have changed & suddenly I might not seem quite as crazy as you first deemed.

26. You're just another analyst, do you know how many people have predicted this? You're retreading old information, which several analysts have given out before this. MGS2: SS when released on Xbox, was Konamis to dish out, but shortly after this, as Hideo Kojima did not like how they went behind his back and released it, created his own studios and brought the rights to the MGS series, aswell as the Boktai series and some other games.

One of the major reasons he did this was because he wanted FULL control over his games, in the EXTREMELY unlikely case that MGS4 goes onto the 360, it will be because Kojima wants it on there, REGARDLESS of pressure from Konami. Plus you can say what you want about the PS3, noone likes the top dog, and everyone likes to root for the underdogs, but you can't say that it is not going to be successful, sure it might lose some of its share to MS and Nintendo, but it's definetely going to finish top this time around as well.

I do consider myself a xbox fanboy, but I post here beacause i actually like the ps3. Just because you perfer one console over another doesnt mean you have to hate the other console. my tv has enough inputs for all the next gen consoles, and i will enjoy what each has to offer many times over the next few years.

For the record, I have 2 ps3's pre orded and plan to keep 1 for myself.

30. Oops. PS3 exclusive.

Besides, isn't 8.5 gigs too small for every PS3 game that will ever be made (according to Sony)? I don't think Kojima would want his series going back to "the box". He supports PS just like Itagaki supports XB.

31. 7. Pffffff.... As if the 360 has the power for it.....

Uh, Hideo Kojima already admitted that the 360 could run his game. So I will assume that comment as complete sarcasm.

Sony needs to spend some money in games development to get an original IP that will never go multi-platform (similar to Halo).

2005? What? "New technology" means that the PS3 has BD-ROM, 1080p and HDMI 1.3 built-in. No add-on needed. The 360 has no HDMI 1.3, no native 1080p or high-def player built-in. What does 360 have? DVD9! Great. I hope you aren't calling that "new technology" because its clearly old whether you want to admit it or not.

"2.Why do ps3 games not look better if they have been in development for just as long and are running on superior hardware?"

Because you don't know when each game was started. How about we compare 2nd phase games not launch titles. I'll repeat this again. The PS3 has not been released. Have you seen a game with your own PS3 in your house on your OWN 1080p HDTV? If not, lets keep the "not look better" with "same development time" on hold.

Stay tuned...

"3.HD-DVD drive was announced as an add on before the 360 launched in 2005."

Announced? Link please...

Nope. The hd dvd drive was rumored a while ago. The hd drive was announced just a two months ago. Not 2005. Nevertheless, announcing or not. Having it ready is what counts. DVD9 is still old and comes with the 360. Yawn...

"4.the 360 has more confirmed exclusives than the ps3 has rumored and confirmed exclusives combined. Google it."

Do you think that "exclusives" are set in stone? Hmmm? Do you think that they just grow on trees? Listen. "Exclusives" 3rd party games come and go. More and more 3rd party developers are going multi-platform. That's why Oblivion, FEAR, Ninja Gadien has moved to the PS3. Soon, AC, Bioshock, Deadrising and Halflife 2.

Now, I ask you. Do you honestly think that Sony and their 1st/2nd party developers will just sit on their hands and NOT make new exclusives over the next few years?

The development environment will be changed once the PS3 finally hits the market. All this banter will end. The 360 has enjoyed minimal competition over the last year regards to next-gen consoles. This will change...

We'll see how well they do once the PS3 is out.

33. GL,

Here's the thing: the PS3 was supposed to come out four months after the 360, not a year. It wasn't until late in the game that they changed the release date due to blu ray issues. What does that mean? That means that the ps3 doesn't have some futuristic technology in it because it came out in 2006 instead of 2005.... it means they couldn't pull it together by their original deadline.

As for hd dvd
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2005/10/x05_a_conversat.html

That's a link to a conversation w/ Robbie Bach at X05 where Bach lays out some of his thoughts on MS's decision to support HD DVD rather than blu ray.

Now, if I may quote you "Do you think that "exclusives" are set in stone? Hmmm? Do you think that they just grow on trees?" I believe the whole point of this article is that they don't just "grow on trees". Exclusives have to be paid for. If the install base of PS3's is too low, then kojima is going to have to pay the bills somehow, and going multi platform is one way of doing it.

The fact is that there will be exclusives for both platforms. There will also be "timed" exclusives for both platforms. Just 'cause MGS4 is coming to the PS3 first doesn't mean that it can't or won't come to the 360.

Posted at 9:15PM on Oct 31st 2006 by What The Geek 0 stars

34. What the Geek,

The original deadline was March 2006. That's four months after the 360. So please don't say the PS3 was supposed to come out in 2005. Next, the "futuristic technology" is technology that isn't yet mainstream. Thus, the BD-ROM and 1080p in console is STILL NEW technology. And the PS3 is spearheading this effort. Just because there have been delays in bring this to market doesn't mean that "it's a failure." Please...

Now, regarding the link. It's an Xbot manager talking about their reasons for supporting hd dvd. It wasn't an "announcement" like ozymandias originally stated. He's trying to make just "taking about hd dvd" the same as actually putting out a product. It's not. The PS3 is actually putting out a 1080p unit that is high-def scalable. And was designed to be from the start. It's not an afterthought nor add-on. And that's the difference. Thus, not the "same" as ozymandias stated.

Regarding the exclusies. Yes, the multiplatofm games are a factor now. I'll repeate. The PS3 has not enter the market yet. Think of it like this. The 360 is like the Sega. And Sony has yet to relese their competing console. And then only then will the developers have a platform to develop for. You'll need not only the hardware but also the fans. And as a Sony fan the one thing I always wanted was a more powerful system. Way more than the PS2.

And the other issue is that Sony will make more 1st party games; those of which will not be "timed" nor "multiplatform." Think about it.

Posted at 12:01PM on Nov 1st 2006 by GL 0 stars

35. GL,

I didn't mean to imply that the PS3 was intended for 2005 release, but yes, it was scheduled for march of 2006.

Who's calling the PS3 a failure? It's not out yet - but it has had a rocky road thus far. They missed their first deadline due to issues w/ blu ray, that's a fact. The production process hasn't improved much since then as they are still having issues.

As for the HD DVD link, if the first one wasn't good enough for you, try this on for size. It's the oldest article I could find on short notice (I'll look harder when I have a chance, I'm moving tomorrow) dated Jan 5 2006, meaning that it wasn't just an afterthought to try and keep up with sony.
http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/7190.cfm

Now, I'm not saying that the ps3 isn't a powerful machine, or that I'm not personally interested in it. I am. The fact remains that they've had a hard time getting the console out the door. While the two systems aren't the same, they are on par with one another. From what I've read from developers, they both have strengths and weaknesses. As I've said, there will be exclusives for both the 360 and the PS3. Of course first party titles won't go multiplatform - duh. Both companies will have first party exclusives. The issue in this post, however, is MGS4. Konami is the publisher, Kojima studios is the dev. Neither is sony owned. MGS games have gone to other platforms before.

When it comes down to it all I'm asking here is that everyone take off their fanboy blinders and look at this whole "console war" from a realistic position. For a little while, ps3's are going to be scarce. The 360 is going to have a higher install base for at least a year or two, and that's going to mean that it's likely we'll see more publishers pushing devs to make games multiplatform.

you misunderstand my question. everything you mentioned was announced in 2005. in order for the technology in the ps3 a year more advanced, it would have to have new technology added to it in 2006. What was added in 2006. btw HDMI and 1080p are not new technologies and as of yesterday the 360 supports native 1080p.

"Nope. The hd dvd drive was rumored a while ago. The hd drive was announced just a two months ago. Not 2005. Nevertheless, announcing or not. Having it ready is what counts. DVD9 is still old and comes with the 360. Yawn..."

Im sorry, it was offically announced on Jan. 4, 2006 at the CES show in Las Vegas. However peter moore and bill gates both stated microsofts plans to produce a toshiba hd dvd external drive back at e3 and X05 in 2005. bill gates even stated that xbox 360 may eventually come with an internal HD DVD player, thus causing the rumors for an internal HD drive. the external drive was never rumored, only the internal drive.

"Because you don't know when each game was started. How about we compare 2nd phase games not launch titles. I'll repeat this again. The PS3 has not been released. Why put it on hold. Look at the games like rainbow6 vegas and nba live07. the ps3 versions have had the same amount of dev time(actually a bit longer) than the 360 version of the same game. so, if the ps3 hardware isnt about the same as the 360 hardware, the games should look better on the ps3. cod2 looks better on a top notch gaming rig than it does on the 360. why, because the detail can be turned up to fully utilize the superior hardware or modern gaming rigs. the ps3 is a supercomputer and with the power of the cell broadband engine and RSX gpu, games should look better on it. that is, if it is superior.

Oblivion, fear, AC, and halflife have already been announced as multiplatform games. the makers of bioshock have already partnered with MS to bring that game exclusively to xbox 360 and games for windows.
as for Ninja Gaiden, it being ported by a young guy from team ninja.

http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3154580

However, none of this detracts from the fact that the 360 has more confirmed (as in %100 sure) exclusive games than the ps3 has confirmed and rumored exclusives combined.

ozymandias (MS employee),

Most of your post just makes claims that 1080p was in M$ plans just like Sony. Nope. Sorry. Even What The Geek states that M$ is trying to play catch-up. The argument that not enough people have HDTVs to take advange of 1080p. That argument is bascically just old curmudgeon speak. If you want to hold on the the status quo you get left behind. It's called progress.

Bioshock WILL COME to the PS3. Bank on it. Yes, I'll make sure that I send you an email so you can post it to your blog and spin it.

"We got it first...blah, blah..." Who cares? The point is that the PS fans get to play it on the PS3 and not the 360.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is not a "port." Stop acting like it's a crappy code job or like it's table scraps. The young programer that is charge of Sigma for the PS3 is 2nd prog of Team Ninja. Do you honsely thing that the team involved doesn't have access to all the resources that Team Ninja uses? So spare me the "port" talk.

Ninja Gaiden 2 is Itagaki's next project for 360. And he has to concentrate on that platform. When he's finished with that game that's when his protégé (Hiashi) will take over and port the game over to the PS3 for that one also!

I think you should post one your blog that Hiashi is just a scrub programer that doesn't know what he's doing. At least that is what you are implying.

Andy Szymanski of Team Ninja to discuss the game's new and improved graphics, weapons, and enemies here: http://ps3.ign.com/articles/736/736392p1.html

P.S. kotaku.com calls you the lippy M$ blogger. LOL!

It IS a port. Its the same game with some graphical tweeks and some new content added. I know that the guy has access to all of team ninjas resources, thats exactly what makes it a port. it uses an improved version of existing resources. Just like FEAR for the 360 and RE4 for the ps2, its a port.

"...When he's finished with that game that's when his protégé (Hiashi) will take over and port the game over to the PS3 for that one also!"

Read my first post on this page. I dont care if an xbox game gets ported to the ps3 or vice versa. I still get to play the game on my favorite console, so everybody wins. I would only be upset if the next ninja gaiden was ps3 exclusive and i didnt own a ps3. but i will own a ps3 and ninja gaiden 2 will not be ps3 exclusive.

If you were really a gaming fan and not a fanboy, you would know that itagaki always puts his games on every platform that can support them without compromise. The ps2 didnt get ninja gaiden because the game would have to be downgraded to run on the console. However this isnt the case anymore, and i think the ps3 will start to see more team ninja projects come its way.

ozymandias (M$),
Did you completely miss my point? Don't you think I've seen those PR releases? I'll repeat it again. Bioshock will release for the PS3 (timed exclusive).

It will be take2's loss if they don't. Tens of millions of PS3 fans will be the lure. If, not, take2 will be losing millions of revenue. It will be dumb for them to ignore. That's just practical business. It will their loss. Because millions of PS3 will just not play Bioshock. Oh well. So, you wont believe this until a year from now when revenue streams start to lessen for take2.

Now, regarding the "port" issue. All you were trying to do was act like Sigma was just a crappy left over game. The main point is that a game that was EXCLUSIVE to the 360 is NOW on the PS3. Booo hoo for xbots! :) Now, you can play it off as "table scraps" and pretend that you are just folloing the defintion of "port" all you want. The fact that Oblivion, fear, and halflife were originally 360/PC games was also the important factor.

If a game is only on the PS3. I don't really care about xbots get to play it or not.

"If you were really a gaming fan and not a fanboy"

The name of this site is www.PS3fanboy.com, not multiplatformgamer.com. You better read it again. I don't come here to read about the crapbox360 console.

This place sure does get it share of ozymandias lippy M$ employees. M$ fans are like little rats. They have to be exterminated.

LOL! Anyways, how do you feel about being compared to a lippy M$ employee? You've been tainted.

40. "The main point is that a game that was EXCLUSIVE to the 360 is NOW on the PS3."

lets change that to: the main point is that a game that was EXCLUSIVE to the xbox is NOW on the PS3. and add: but it would have been on a ps2 if the ps2 could handle it. but maybe it will comfort you to know its one of the ps3 games im looking foward to. after all i already own ninja gaiden, the hurricane packs, and NG black. gotta complete the collection :)
and its still a port.

"The fact that Oblivion, fear, and halflife were originally 360/PC games was also the important factor."

These games were never announced as exclusives. they were exclusive because the ps3 missed its original launch. if blu ray wasnt holding the ps3 back, it would have launched shortly after microsoft, not be 6 milllion units behind, and shorted the 360 a few de facto exclusives. oblivion, FEAR, FIFA, moto gp, ghost recon, and possibly DOA 4 could have made it to the ps3 this year. in half-life2's case, it isnt even available on the 360 yet, and when it available on the 360 you will also be able to pick it up on the ps3 as well. because it and the rest of the games you named are multiplatform and are exclusive by default.

"Tens of millions of PS3 fans will be the lure."

by that logic alone MGS4 is coming to the 360 because the 360 will have 15 million or more units in the hands of consumers by the time it launches.

i'll take your complete lack of counter points and attempted character assassination as comfirmation that you realize im right.

now can we agree to disagree and move on?
