PS3 exclusives round-up [Update 2]

ps3 exclusivesEveryone loves exclusives. Except for people who don't. Count me among that group that appreciates a good exclusive... they're often our best hope that a game will utilize the full power of the given platform. Exclusives can mean that developers don't have to worry about design compromises that could impact the game's ability to take advantage of system specific naunces and features.

That said, let's take a look at what we know (or at least at what think we know) regarding PS3 exclusive titles. What's not on the list? What would we like to see on the list? What shouldn't be on the list? Thanks to PS3 fanboy, Mike C, for getting the ball rolling with the following list.

PS3 Potential Exclusives (i.e. these are not all 100% confirmed, but the vast majority are):

[Update: Changed the list headings to reinforce that this is a round-up of potential exclusives, not gospel. We still encourage you to answer the questions posed in the original post: namely, what exclusives are missing from the list and what exclusives would you like to see on the list?]

1. Wow, who's @sshole did you pull that list out of? Was it Kutaragi? or maybe Kaz? There's very little info on HALF of thost titles floating around at the moment, and I think guarenteeing exclusivity for them is shoddy journalism at best, and blatently mislead fanboyism at worst.

Posted at 5:59PM on Oct 21st 2006 by What The Geek

2. I apologize for the double post, but put up or shut up. Make each of those titles links to a page about the game, or to a press release that mentions exclusivity, and then we'll see where the facts stand.

3. Why so defensive, What The Geek? I don't see any place in that post where PS3 fanboy is "Guaranteeing" anything. In fact I see PS3 fanboy blatantly stating that this is not a set-in-stone list... they say "let's take a look at what we know (or at least at what think we know) regarding PS3 exclusive titles." Seems pretty straight forward that this isn't meant as a list you should base your retirement investments on. It's even filed under rumor and attributed to a reader submission.

4. What evidence is there that Eye of Judgement is a real game and not just a tech demo? Or even a good idea for a game for that matter...

Posted at 6:25PM on Oct 21st 2006 by Edge of Blade

5. Almost all the games i see here are first-party (ie made by sony) so how can you call the list into question?

There are certain games on the list that aren't made by sony (VF5, MGS4,FF Versus XIII, FF XIII, Full Auto2, DMC4) but they have been confirmed as exclusives for ps3, for quite some time now. You obviously didn't know this.

If you don't know what you're talking about, don't waste peoples time with this kind of stuff.

I hate it when fanboys get nappy rash like this: "Wow, who's @sshole did you pull that list out of? Was it Kutaragi? or maybe Kaz?"

I'm guessing you own 360? Right?
Then go play it.

6. Ed,

the article is also posted under news.... and frankly, it can't be both. The list itself implies that we know the first groups to be exclusive because the second section is labeled as "Unconfirmed Exclusives" and the third section is titled "Unanounced PS3 Games (but likely exclusives)". This implies that the first section is *confirmed* if the other sections are unconfirmed.

People come to joystiq owned and operated sites for information. By implying confirmation of the first section, and filing it under news, you're leaving the door wide open to misinterpretation by rabid fanboys everywhere.

7. Sean,

Many of these games you claim are confirmed exclusives are listed on the publisher's sites as "currently only announced for the PS3" Which means RIGHT NOW they haven't announced them for other consoles. It doesn't mean they're guarenteed exclusives for the PS3. Look what happened with assassins creed. I'm very interested in the PS3, however, I'm interested in factual news about it, not conjecture filed as news.

8. @What The Geek

Why are you complaining...

Oh, you probably own a Xbox 360.

Hey, I understand. It's a pretty nice list and one of the reasons why the PS2 was king as it had a much better game lineup. Things probably won't be any different this generation after a year or two.

Anyway, if you are a xbox 360 fan, I believe you came to the wrong website as this is ...

Posted at 6:53PM on Oct 21st 2006 by AG

9. I do have a 360, and I want a ps3. When M$ screws up, I call them out on it just as quick as I call Sony out. In this case, I'm more concerned with a list that isn't factual getting spread as fact. It hurts the PS3 in the long run if the list turns out to be inaccurate, and people treat it as though it is.

Posted at 6:57PM on Oct 21st 2006 by What The Geek

10. If anyone honestly believed Assassins creed was a PS3 exclusive they were delusional. It was first announced at an Xbox event, what does that tell people?
Merceneries2 is the exact same, that will be coming to 360 too.

You're approach to this article isn't in the slightest bit logical.

List which games YOU think aren't going to be exclusives. It might clear up what you're trying to target.

Posted at 7:02PM on Oct 21st 2006 by Sen

11. Actually, later tonight or tomorrow, I'll go around to some publisher's websites and get some facts to associate w/ this article. If PS3Fanboy isn't going to fact check, I guess I'll have to do it for them.

Assassin's creed was touted as a ps3 exclusive for over a year, Sony themselves used it as a large feather in their cap at E3. The 360 version wasn't announced 'til the beginning of September.

One particular game I see on this list off the top of my head that hasn't even been announced yet to the best of my knowledge is Kingdom Hearts 3. Now, yea, it most likely will be a PS3 exclusive, however, Square Enix is planning on kicking games to ALL THREE CONSOLES this time around, and who's to say that one of their biggest hits won't go cross platform so they can make more $ on it?

Posted at 7:03PM on Oct 21st 2006 by What The Geek

12. @What the Geek

I apologize for being so harsh, I didn't see your #7 post(where your intersted in the PS3)...

I thought you were another one of those rabid Xbox 360 fanboys.

Either way, many of those games will be PS3 exclusives, some may not, but based upon last generation it seems very likely that the PS3 will have the best games as well.

Posted at 7:04PM on Oct 21st 2006 by AG

13. AG,

It's cool, Fanboy's on both sides drive me up a wall as well, and I didn't mean to come off as one.

One of the big things I've seen about this upcoming console cycle is that you most likely won't be able to compare it to the current one. Square was tied to Sony very tightly last cycle, with the exception of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles for the GC and FFXI for the Xbox (also 360) and they've pledged to support all three consoles.

All three companies are using very unique business strageties this time around. Nintendo has a unique controller, Sony is pushing larger storage sizes on BluRay, and Microsoft is pushing Xbox Live, and Marketplace. They all are coming at very different price points as well.

Another factor that developers and publishers are concerned with is that the PS3 will have a very small install base at first due to the production errors. Not to mention that they're loosing an entire holiday season in Europe. Smaller Devs have even had trouble affording the PS3 Dev kits that they need to make games for the system.

All of this has led publishers that steered clear of the original Xbox to be a little more open to putting their games on multiple platforms this time around.

The moral of what I'm saying here, is take any exclusivity news with a grain of salt until you see a press release from the publisher that actually uses the word "excluxive".

14. and apologies all around for my ignorance of the X05 announcement of Assassin's creed.... I worked like 60+ hours a week back then, and didn't have much of a chance to read up on what had been announced.

Posted at 7:20PM on Oct 21st 2006 by What The Geek

15. This is getting irritating.

Assassins Creed was first announced at X05 under the name of "Project Assassin"

At E32006 it was announced for PS3 (Demoed on 360 dev kit + 360 controller)

Later in the year it was announced for 360 + pc, but the rest of the world (minus blind playstation fanboys) had guessed that by then

Posted at 7:22PM on Oct 21st 2006 by Sen

16. "Square Enix is planning on kicking games to ALL THREE CONSOLES"

Square-Enix will be releasing games on the Wii (Final Fantasy Crystal) and maybe one or two on the Xbox 360 (The only one I can think of is Final Fantasy 11. The only reason Square-Enix made Final Fantasy 11 for the 360 is because of its Gigantic online network), But Square-Enix will definitely release the Kingdom Hearts (Kingdom Hearts 3) and Final Fantasy (Final Fantasy 13) franchise on the Ps3. The reason being is because Sony is part owner of Square-Enix and because of Blu-ray's massive space (and some other reasons..)

I do question some titles like Final Fantasy VII and Kingdom Hearts 3 because they never announced Final Fantasy VII (Although there were rumors) and they havn't announced the development of Kingdom Hearts 3 yet (I'm hoping the people who did Kingdom Hearts 2 will do Kingdom Hearts 3.. Imagine Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XIII in 1080p!!)

17. You know, i dont care if a game is an exclusive anymore. Im getting a PS3 for the gaming and all the other things that it does (BD in particuler).

If i cant play a game because its only on xbox or Wii, then big freakin' wup.. just ride out the hype and life goes on... there are other bigger things to worry about in life than not being able to play a game.

Posted at 8:35PM on Oct 21st 2006 by Caramella Bongo ... how are you today?

18. Looking good. Here's a few corrections for the list though -

Formula One isn't a PS3 exclusive, but is a Sony exclusive (PS2, PSP and PS3).

Kingdom Hearts 3 hasn't been announced and as the franchise spans both Sony and Nintendo machines it is fairly possible it will also be on the Wii.

Monster Kingdom and Unknown Realms are actually the same game, just its former and current name; so Monster Kingdom should be deleted.

Ninja Gaiden Sigma is just an enhanced port of the Xbox Ninja Gaiden game so not technically exclusive.

Omikron 2 is still listed as appearing on PC and Xbox 360 on all the big games sites.

WarDevil Enigma hasn't been announced as an exclusive (it doesn't even have an announced publisher yet so exclusive details are a bit far off!) and has been shown on the Xbox 360.

Zone of the Enders 3 also hasn't been announced.

19. #18 - Bennet. Excellent comment. Thanks for answering in the spirit of the post. Yeah, some of those are grey areas... are they exclusive or not. Definitely looks like Omnikron 2 should come off. I could have sworn I saw a Square person confirming developemnt on the next in the Kingdom Hearts series.

Posted at 9:34PM on Oct 21st 2006 by Ed

20. "the article is also posted under news.... and frankly, it can't be both."

Frankly, it can. This list contains both formally announced exclusives (via press release) and rumored ones (without press release). So, as labeled, it is both.
