PS3 interface -- some details/theories revealed!

The Playstation 3 interface is just about as close as we've gotten to seeing the online service. This is kind of sad, what with launch nearing, but worry not! This interface demo reveals a few interesting things that, while not related at all to the online service (still promised to be up and running upon launch day!) it lets you have an idea what to expect with your options. A friend who bought the 360 upon launch spent an entire day just combing through the interface, so there's always something to look for!

Read on, friends, read on... for a large bulleted list awaits you...Here's IGN's translation of the Japanese PS3 site and the XMB interface (from left to right):

What do you guys think? Anything particularly of interest? We want to see what this "Remote Play" is, also how Sony intends to do system updates. Still, this is at least something to chew on until we see more specific attributes of each bullet.

5. Location free player (and the non sony Slingbox) are essentially devices that stream video content from your tv over the internet to any device that has access to it.

7. Where's linux?

Posted at 8:45PM on Oct 3rd 2006 by Andy 0 stars

8. Either Phil Harrison or Kaz Hirai said something about linux recently, but it remains cloudy as to how one accesses it, or if its included on the system from the start to begin with. Thats still a fuzzy area.

12. Hmm...nothing in there sounds remotely comparable to Xbox 360 Media Center Extender functionality.

13. Sweet, SACD, thanks of shoveling another failed sony format into our faces.

Posted at 12:58AM on Oct 4th 2006 by Duscrom 0 stars

14. Duscrom... having the option of Super audio CD under the music thing is hardly shoveling a format on us, i'm guessing its just a special folder for SACDs to be saved too.

and if this thing can stream media and surf the internet, that'd be sweet, as i have had no intention of repurchasing xp JUST for a media extender to do the same on my 360.

15. I design interfaces professionally and am a little dubious about the PS3 interface. The fact that texts are only shown when icons are in focus, and that all icons are very similar in appearance, and yet there are hundreds of icons and options and they are split into broad categories makes me think the UI will not fit well with average Joe.

The fact that things don't appear to be (looking at the above list) arranged ergonomically, also makes me think it will be frustrating to use. Having to skim over Photos, Music, Video, etc. just to reach network play and friends is marketing before common sense really.

The 360 blade UI isn't perfect but I think it is a more succesful interface, despite it's initial appearance of greater complexity relative to the PS3 UI.

All this is conjecture and opinion, please don't bother making a flamefest, thanks.

16. don't forget, the GUI can be upgraded. i've owned a psp since launch and have watch sony add location free, rss, internet funtions as well as added funtionality and codec support to nearly all areas(music, video, and photos, etc...) the GUI is flexable and intuitive in many respects. take a look at this engadgetHD post on a newly released home reciever.
