A few days ago at GameDaily, the latest in a series of articles about the PS3's price was posted. This one centers around the 2 different SKU models and how the $500 and $600 models are indeed warranted, if not a bargain. To summarize their points:$500 SKU
- No HDMI support outta the box -- Sony will offer some AV device to get you your HD fix or you won't need HDMI to view Blu-Ray's 720p or 1080i resolutions.
- No wireless internet connectivity -- move your router closer to the TV to give your game machine a wired connection. Recall for XBox360 owners who bought the $400 machine, the wireless adaptor was $100, so arguing price is a moot point if we can simply move a router around.
- No card reader support -- if you're using it as a game machine, there's not much point to moving pictures from a camera or saving games onto cards with the 20GB hard drive.
Conclusion: $500 PS3 is for those of us who just want to game. We don't care so much for HD, heck, a lot of us don't have an HD TV to play it on. Even if so, there's probably some component cables to boost the resolution.
$600 SKU
This is a Blu-Ray multimedia machine. Gaming is optional (but recommended). Standalone Blu-Ray players come in around $1000. So you're winning on $400 already, plus a 60GB hard drive, plus complete PSX and PS2 backwards compatibility. If that doesn't sound like a pretty good deal, what else do you need? The $600 PS3 is pretty much half the price of its separate pieces (Blu-Ray Player, 60GB drive, PSX and PS2).
[Many thanks to Marco for this tip]

People can attempt to justify it all they want...
$500 is WAY too much for a game console, which Ken Kutaragi said the PS3 is not.

Although it also includes a refrigerator, a Maybach is not a bargain. Sony cannot win this war on price by offering "value" that has nothing to do with gaming. The PS3 is NOT a bargain to play next generation games. It needs to win on being the best platform for the next-gen.
As a Blu-Ray player, sure, yup. It will be the cheapest route to playing Blu-Ray HD movies. If you're into that kind of thing.

Am I going to purchase a PS3? I was planning on it, but I can't really say that I'm all that excited by the launch titles at the moment.

You guys are doing what you need to do in reporting everything that comes out about PS3 so this is to those that make the news, not report it:
Give us something new.
The same old tired stories are not winning ANYONE over. Those that drank the company kool-aid are the only ones that believe it. Give us something new.

True! But I have never been critical of them saying the same old thing until now, before I was critical of what they were saying.

A great way to justify such a high price to the general public is making it a general purpose PC, i.e. make it compete with PCs (not only in entertainment fronts). That way it would seem like a worthwile investment even to poor families, where a cheap PC could be needed. But I doubt that Sony would allow for that to happen...

I look at things like this, if I'm paying $500, what's another 100 bucks?
Plus, you'll probably end up buy this stuff anyway, I think they should just offer one SKU, you'd think thye learn from M'soft. How many people are buying 360 Core systems these days?

judging from most people's comments, they are pretty pissed at the price and no too impressed with the games coming out. people criticized MC for releasing a beefed up XBOX and nothing more but the ps3 seems to be doing the same. Wii:ds::ps3:psp, better grapics but not much else.

Actually it's even worse. I've payed much much more for the actual games as for any hardware. This is where you dump your money, finally.

An extra $100 - $200 is a huge deal. After folks spend all this money on just the console, they are going to have to buy a second controller, the appropriate cables for their TV set and Games. So $500-$600 quickly turns into $700-$800.
And that is why yes...$500-$600 is a deal breaker for many. Most people just cannot justify gaming at such a heavy cost.
MS won't drop prices this Winter, but I wouldn't be surprised if they threw in a free game from Microsoft Games Studios...like Kameo, Perfect Dark, or PGR3.
That would only make the PS3 seem like an even worse deal to consumers this Winter.

why pay that much for gaming unless you want to watch movies. Justification is masterbation in the end you are only screwing yourself. They can't justify it with me. They are tring to win a format war a little to much. Who's to say blue ray will even win. What if blue ray becomes Sony next UMD? I would rather spend a thousand dollars and get hooked up with a butt load of software. What is Sony even going to have to load up on launch day. A few titles here and there. How lame! the 360 had a better line up of games then the ps3 has going. The Wii blows both out of the water as far as game line up goes. Good luck to the ps3 they just keep kicking themselves this round.

"...the wireless adaptor was $100, so arguing price is a moot point if we can simply move a router around."
That second bulleted point is a bit counterintuitive, don't you think? You SHOULD use wired for online gaming. Going wireless can be rude because it adds a bottleneck to your connection (11-54Mbps vs 100-1000Mbps), not to mention that it can be unreliable. 802.11n (100+Mbps) isn't far off as well, so having built-in wireless at 54Mbps seems a bit lame.
Realistically, the only good reason to have wireless with the PS3 is for a non-USB connection to your PSP if you don't have a wireless router.

Paul, not everyone reads PS3fanboy, so there's no valid reason to complain.
Anyway, sputnik, 100-200$ dollars isn't "a huge deal" considering you are going to spend a lot more for everything else. It's basically two wireless 360 controllers, but if it's that much of a deal, then the Wii, and NOT the 360 or PS3 are for you. If it's about price, Wii wins in all fronts. If it's about value, PS3 wins. It's that simple. Factoring the games, it depends on your likes.

$600 is still too expensive for the average consumer, even if you attempt to rationalize the cost against a stand alone $1000 Blu-ray player.
How many people do you know who bought a DVD player for $600 or more? There were the early adopters, but the format really didn't take off until the players came down to $300 and below.
Right now the PS3 is a basically an expensive game console, or a relatively cheap entry into the Blu-Ray world, which is still more expensive than competing HD DVD players. Marrying to two does have it's benefits if you're seeking both, but all has the disadvantages that you're paying a premium if you don't necessarily want or need both.

It depends on what's value to you. If value = games, and it's only about games AND price, then Wii definitely. If it's about more than just games (i.e. an entertainment center), it's PS3. Choose wisely, padawan.

The PS3 is still overpriced.
After pricing the $600 SKU (which any sane person knows is the one to get), and one game, plus tax.. you are looking at easily $700
$700 for next-gen gaming, when a Xbox 360, with a solid library when the PS3 arrives, will only put you back $460 for the SAME experience!!

Boots...lets be reasonable. For $200 more a format that looks to be all set for a huge failure does not in my eye speak to value. Blu-Ray is off to a bad start. Encoding at MPEG-2 is causing movies to look inferior to HD-DVD movies which are encoded in VC-1. Blu-Ray has only reached 25 GB while HD-DVD is at 30 GB.
Also we are starting to find out the truth about 1080p and games. Call of Duty 3 will be 1080i and 720p only. Just as every other game for the PS3. Don't believe the hype. There is a very few number of TV sets out there that can display true 1080p (1080i upconverted doesn't count). And developers will create content for 1080i and 720p as the performance and frame rate hit would be too severe to run a game at 1080p. It's just not worth it.
