The future-proof risk takers talk total potential

Here's some more quote cud to chew on, this time from CEO Howard Stringer. The big boss has admitted that they're taking a pretty big gamble with the price of the new console, but if the full potential is realized then the console will essentially be "future-proof" while kickin' around for years to come.

The "total potential" is the key point to that issue. The only way we're going to see the full potential lived up in the console is if third-party developers can push the hardware as far as they can (and how about some more innovation while we're at it?). Of course the more complicated the system becomes, the harder that's going to be. But once that happens, fans might be echoing his sentiments of the competition: "I don't think anyone will be worried about Nintendo or Xbox's cheaper price." We'll see!

1. Ugh... and I am serious when I say this. I no longer believe I can buy a Ps3. I cannot support a company that simply lies to the public. Unless something else happens between now and November I am no longer a ps3 fanboy...

2. How is Sony lying?

3. I don't think it's Sony lying so much as it is, they are trying to be over-confident while knowing this situation could really hurt them. Their attitude is all wrong. They talk big, but the proof was supposed to be "in the pudding" this past Spring. Their new disc format is going to hurt them. They have too many executives making too many foolish statements too much of the time. I can see why their PR person quit.

4. Blu-Ray shouldn't hurt them. Most of the movie studios seem to be leaning towards it rather than HD-DVD.

Posted at 6:18PM on Jun 28th 2006 by Tony 0 stars

5. Blue-Ray isn't going to 'hurt' them. Cramming it down people's throats and making those people pay a premium for it is. 10% of the US population has an HD TV. Only a fraction of those are clammoring for a new disc format. So, a fraction of 10% of the US population wants Blue-Ray/HD-DVD, but all of us get to pay for Blue-Ray in the PS3. That's nice!
(I have a great HD set. But I don't want EITHER of these formats. I've got a bunch of DVDs that look fantastic on my set and I'm not interested in paying a huge premium to upgrade the picture quality of my new movies (which my friends can't brrow and trade with me).)
Blur-Ray is cool for games that will need it. But not many will. 9 Gigs is a LOT of space for game assets (especially considering you can only load 256+Mb at a time into RAM (more on the 360 if you don't need so much RAM for the engine and non-graphical data).
Potential is great, but I'm not going to bankroll Sony until they reach that potential. That's thier job, not mine. I'm gonna pay for what I get, not what I might get fi thisgs go the right way. I got burned with the original Xbox and Live. It was fantastic when Live lived up to it's potential, but until that point, Paying for the networking equipment in the original Xbox was a loss.
Asking consumers to pay for potential is asking them to gamble. That's not cool.
(Please note that I'm a game-whore and when there's a game I really wanna play on the PS3 released. I'll be pulling out the credit card once again.)

6. how is sony lying- ummm claiming that a GAMING CONSOLE is future proof is probably the first step

7. how is sony lying ?

let's talk about
-not proposing 2 differents SKU...
-dual HDMI output...
-long planned new pad... with extra motion sensor a week.

I think when Someone speaks for Sony it is quite often worst than the worst Trolls found in comments.

8. The ps2 didn't show it's potential at first. Yet, when XBox came out, the ps2 was able to compete if the programmers were good (Ratchet and Clank, Jak and Daxter, etc), so we have a unit with us that runs at half the speed of an xbox, but has lasted in the long-run. At worst, the ps3 is comparable to the xbox, if not better, and development is much easier than ps2 (though not as easy as xbox360)... with the third party support, I think they'll just squeek through.

9. I haven't heard ANYWHERE that developing for the PS3 is much easier than the PS2. All I've heard is the PS3 is a powerhouse and how a number of developers feel about the console.

The PS3 has an uphill battle to face. It is almost guaranteed not to pull in the same market share from the last two iterations. PS1 was king, PS2 was king, PS3 will not see the same level of success as its younger brothers. Exclusives are already jumping ship and cross-platforming, prices are decidedly too high for casual gamers regardless of the "deal" you get with a blu-ray player, and when a Sony rep speaks they display their ignorance of the industry and their arrogance.

Do I want a PS3? Hell yeah. Will I get one at launch? Hell no. The PS2 is more attractive right now. I'll jump onto a PS3 in 08 when the developers have had time to tweak the Cell and show me something that they can't do with the Xbox 360.
